HOI has a steep learning curve and is a complex game, it's not my cup of tea but I'm willing to give it another go. A good friend of mine loves it and listening to his stories about his campaigns has got me interested.
Panzer Corps is relatively easy to learn but hard to master and can be a very challenging game.
You could try buying Panzer Corps 1. It's much cheaper and you'll get hundreds of hours of game play.
HOI 4 is realy not that complex, its great game but once you get hang of it its pretty easy. Also it cant be compared to panzer corps, except that both games cover ww2 theres nothing similiar about them
I guess I'll stick with turn based strategy games for now, at least it doesn't hurt my eyes as much.
I haven't bought PzC2 yet but I'd also suggest looking at Order of Battle and Strategic Command WW2: World at War. Also, the best game in the Hoi series IMO was Darkest Hour which you can find on sale for a couple dollars.
Other good options are War Plan (not available on Steam yet) and Unity of Command.
HoI4 has little in the way of AI and the real time gameplay is a bit hectic but it at least has some interesting gameplay features like production and technological development. But the combat gameplay is the pretty basic Paradox norm, I actually enjoyed HoI2 and 3 more than 4, HoI3 had a great order of battle feature that I loved and HoI2 had some really great mods that made the game so much better. HoI4 doesnt have any of that really, but at least the map looks nicer.
Panzer Corps and Panzer General games IMO are very linear repetitive hex based affairs where you are fighting battle after battle. I think Order of Battle is better for that sort of game but they are both very old style games. I've played Spectrum 48K strategy games that were far more enjoyable.
But take a look at SC because its a great game where you are fighting the whole of WW2 with all the relevant countries under your control, its pretty immersive and the AI is really good, its a tough game to beat.
Casual = HOI
Patrician Taste = Graviteam Tactics
Nostalgia = Panzer Korps
Graviteam tactics did my head in, no proper tutorial and utterly confusing. Would rather eat nails for dinner than try and play that garbage.
Panzer corps is different game completley
my advice is to play both if you never played them
