As for armor, in order to get the most out of a staff you definitely want high intelligence, as well as decent dex for crits. Moon equipment will give good intelligence boosts, and the fox mask gives a huge dex boost. So I wore a fox mask, two moon rings, and I can't remember which cape and cloak off the top of my head but they were drops that I got that had great modifiers
I ended up being able to basically hit all enemies on screen for 5k-10k damage using the meteor staff and this setup. Charging the staff actually gave me a significantly lower dps. Using spellshield to make sure I had plenty of health I just spam clicked my way through the entire game with no trouble.
Hope that helps
Edit: Farm the snakes and birds on nymbus island for some decent cloak and cape drops. The fox mask can be bought from the merchant cart, and the reaper ghost guys found in the graveyard will drop an assortment of good weapons. Farming those enemies should find you good gear to handle most things in the game.
However, assuming you actually want to craft the best stuff in the game it requires you to craft every other sword/staff then combining them to make the best of each respectively. As far as armor goes moon armor is likely best for staff use, and mythic armor for sword use. Wands are the best off hand items for combat, I think they aren't craftable though.
On topic:
Meteor Staff is definitely up there. Sometimes you can get lucky and a boss will drop something like an ice staff early on, as well. Both of these are definitely more towards the end game tier of staves. You could always craft one of the Fae weapons, but that tends to be resource intensive and, for reasons I'll mention in a bit, completely subject to RNG.
Early to mid game you can get moon and void staves from goblin magi, but those are just stepping stones to better staves; relegated to utility items after that (they have great effects on them that cause them to remain useful). I always keep moon staff on me for traveling through (or even fishing in) an area with enemies.
Just keep in mind that even when crafting (or farming), an item will not always be at it's best (might have a low rarity level or whatever you call that number in the corner of the stats). If it has a low rarity level or quality level or whatever, it can easily be worse than a lower tier item that has a high level. So, it won't matter if you reroll it with a Wen Rune and you might as well vendor it. You can probably save scum the results, but the high tier stuff takes forever to finish even with mana-linking + void staff + mana-linking skills.
-Sword focus
-Wand focus
-Chimera focus
-necro pet focus
with some overlap between the different types (IE necro pet focus can use sword, staff, or chimera as a sub focus, or the other way around) and Most playstyles will want some of the gear from the others as a supplemental (IE moon staff or void staff) for the effects
Across all playstyles the Amplify trait is arguably the best since you can obtain 100% crit rate, Wizard (% stat gain from base) is also very good for every playstyle so I wont be calling these out in the gear
for the weapon slot,
-Sword focus - any Sword from the void sword and higher. Ideally focusing on the faster attack speed ones (Void, Magic, Evil, or Fae) as you can get 1.5-4 attacks in compared to some of the other higher end swords (IE light)
-Wand focus - evil eye staff, meteor staff, fae staff, and potentially ice staff are all good end game staffs. Upgrade to the stone staff ASAP (you can buy the V-rune from the traveling Nak Merchant) if your going this route.
-Chimera focus - Star wand all the way, hard to beat 100 base Chimera power. Beyond that your most likely going to go wand since range and all.
-necro pet focus - Anything with the Minion trait on it, more undead to do your bidding = good
For the secondary slot,
There is only three real endgame items for this slot, Twisted wand (extra hp), vine wand (int), or Viceral wand (Rare drop from Gnarish them knight golem dudes int he twisted forest) with Viceral wand being the best. beyond that use what you can get with the magnifying glass paying for itself several times over 9there is a hidden juju fruit (+max hp) and a hidden mana globe in the world)
for the source slot,
Runic Nak is my fav, but a bauble if your COM or prism if you not is the way to go.
Helm- Fox helm because of innate amplify 3, ember or higher helms for Sword, or wiz hat for chimera/wand. If Necro you'll want the chittering mask, or the Nekomancer hood instead.
Cloak - Power for early game, Magi for late. The runic resistances are nice here. This slot is mostly up to you though
Cape - Croakavile cape because of the forced Amplify 2 is plenty good, and farmable due to the basement so no need to waste Wen runes on it.
Rings - Sword goes for Spiked ring then death rings (drop only from snap dragons, and a few other things) Wand/chimera goes for near anything with Moon rings (drop from gobos) being the arguable best
Neck - Medail's Medal is the best in slot provided you don't care about mana regen and can get it to drop. Sun amulet doubles your time during the day when equipped, with Moon Amulet doing the same but for night. Storm Amulet had 2x mana regen force on it. Stone or a bought one is good early game.
Chimera - I'll refer you to one of my guides for this so go hear Navi out a bit.
good to haves-
Any backpack/helm of the gathering type (harvest, tree, or mine) since the packs double the item drops and the helms double the exp gain (and extras type dependent)
Void wand - drops from gobo wizzards after the sun stone is on. +100% mana link power Very nice.
Moon Wand - when equipped makes all monsters passive, also drops from gobo wizzards after the sun stone is on. just waltz right by anything that isn't a boss. very Boss like
Sun/Moon Amulet- Sun drops from troll mages i believe. doubles the time in the respective time type.
Heart rings - when equipped gives you a 50% chance to have a juju seed drop upon a harvest level up, PER RING
Nyxyn's ring - Doubles falling star (mana regen) and ghost spawns per ring.
Ring of the forge - drastically increased crumble forge success rate.
Bomb Pack - 10x bomb power! monsters drop bombs! find one as a rare drop and become your local demlin today!.
Wing pack - Forced amplify i think. SUPER rare drop, makes you go ZOOM (2-4x movement speed while equipped, stacks with Broom, and Feather artifact. Hyper speed collision NOT fully tested, you may enter warp speed with all three)
Infinity potions- While not a piece of gear, they are 1-2 in game day recharging mana potions that restore something like 2-3x your mana pool.
