Impact of government type and political party (and other things I didn't know)

For new players, something I didn't realize until I'd been playing for nearly a year is that hovering over the government type on the politics screen shows the benefit and drawbacks of your government type. For an absolute monarchy, it 'might' be advantageous, if you have high enough prestige, to foment discontent and get the government overthrown.

Note that if your prestige is too low, it's game over.

This impacts obviously your GDP and naval budget growth, and as such has a secondary impact on how much money is actually going into research (and the dreaded 'average' or 'behind' message.)

There are lots of things that aren't well documented in the 'help' section, and not covered in the 'naval academy'. Maybe other players have some tips that they stumbled over, but assumed that 'everybody must know this'.

Government types and how to control unrest to get the type you want is absolutely a skill in UAD. You have to know how to handle diplomacy, event solution choices, and the war/peace function to keep your prestige used properly, gained/lost effectively. As was pointed out, it CAN become critical but if you're playing properly it shouldn't be an issue for the game over function. For Government type control, it's absolutely necessary because you have to know how to get a high unrest, stay afloat prestige-wise, and get back down if things are going sideways. Revolution is required to switch government types for the tyrannical sorts of governments. Democracies can swap control parties more easily and fall more easily.

So, you have to learn all these things and it's not usually in the basic skill set. Intermediate players can probably dabble in it fairly safely, and advanced players can do this stuff at will with little risk. I'm still in the intermediate zone, I've successfully forced a revolution and deposed a communist regime to get a 'center party' democracy. It was challenging and I never felt 'at ease' doing it. I think some players here are probably 'eh, it's a piffle' but not me.
