He has a point though, I know designing is a big part of the game but saving blueprints would still be nice.

Considering how easy it is to duplicate someone else's ship design all you need is a screenshot with the relevant information.

Still way easier to get a ship blueprint than to remake it. Especially so you don't have to do the balancing part.

A ship save file (in the custom_battle_data json file) looks like the stuff in the link below. I have just verified it is possible to actually transfer it around (I did so by copying it to a text file, then changing the shipname field, then pasting it back in at the right spot). If you want to actually try getting this ship in (its a silly Japanese 1940 super battleship with ONLY 20x 20 inch guns), then: search your custom_battle_data file for:

"Key":1940

(if its not there you maybe haven't designed any ships for custom battle in 1940)

Then shortly afterwards where it says [{"designId paste all the below text between the [ and the {
Make sure to include the comma at the very end since that is what separates the ships from each other in the file. If it works for you, then you should have the ship design for the Particularly Dangerous class Japanese super battleship available to you for 1940 in custom battle. Oh, you will need to do this while the game is closed though, and make a backup of your custom_battle_data file just in case.

Steam doesn't like me pasting it all into a comment, so I had to google "place to paste text" and found this site. So yeah, sorry for the external link.

The stuff you have researched is semi-random..the deeper you are into the game, the LESS likely that the ship you have designed will be available for someone else to build.

What no one is saying in the above posts is the obvious need for a workshop where individual ships, classes of ships or even the whole fleet of one nation for certain time period could be created. The existence of a workshop for ship designs would increase the play ability and longevity of the game especially with people who have little knowledge of history and naval construction of the time period covered by the game. Most people who play this game like me simply want tp blow things up ( in the game) and not be involved in ship construction

Not sure where you're getting this...I would say MOST people think creating their own ships is the best part of the game.
If the ship designer needs a workshop, id be hard pressed to say it needs one for individual player designs- as the devs have pointed out, as tech is semi random, it greatly lessens the amount of ship designs that would be available. And thats before you get to the individual tactics & doctrines of a player.

On the other hand, supporting proper modding of the ship designer, custom hulls & parts, etc, would go a long way, much further then I think posting a players own "full" design could ever hope to.

I agree that the workshop, if one is available, would be for specific hulls or other pieces/parts of ships, rather than the completed project. German 88mm guns (3.5"), in particular, would be pretty sweet..as would the ability to use meters vs. inches.

I really wanna be able to drop some Tillmans or large standard types into the water, I seriously hope that it's a priority for the devs, the upsides are obvious

Actually, the only requirement for custom battle is that the ship would only be available for 1940 Japan.

I have tested this by altering the barbette quality to one that is not researched (due to a bug, at the very least Japan 1940 can only use Barbette 1 due to the others not being researched, but editing the value to a higher one still lets you use the ship... albiet after reducing the weight a bit since it then becomes too heavy).

But yeah, we really need a way to be able to export a ship into a standalone file, perhaps one that can be put onto the workshop too.

Being able to just get some historical designs off the workshop, or to try fighting your friend's ship design.
