For the guns you would need to look for:
{"name":"gun_main_1","progress":100.0,"index":-1}
Progress could be different depending on starting year.
If want more of the main guns researched you only need to add more like above up to 49.
The last, either 49 or any lower you pick need to have less than 100 progress.
{"name":"gun_main_49","progress":72.97475,"index":-1}
You would need to look how many are already researched for you, to added right numbers after.
Because of the size from the file it can take long to add or change things with Notepad++. Maybe another similar tool works better with that.
Changes are on your risk, so try it on another save file, or make a backup. If you want it easier, you could start a 1940 save, copy all the research, then make a 1890 save and paste that on there. Wouldn't do that, because ships are to expensive for that time. It still can help with the number of guns (research name), or whatever you want to change.
Important: The Reseach for the Player is always near the start of the file. All AI players use the same format, so watch out which you change.
It starts at the first "techonologies":[{"name":"start","progress":100.0,"index":-1}, you can find in that file and research ends before the first "techMods": .
There isn't a good way to tell which "gun_main_11" is the one you look for, so it can be a bit tricky.
And... bugs can happen too, so make sure with changes before you report any of them as a bug.
