Playing Japan might be the most free of wierd mechanics, no wonder it's popular.
And I have the opposite problem. I have a fleet which dont move for around 5 rounds and every round I a) fight the enemy and just flee in battle or b) have a "sucessfull" withdraw before...
Portsmouth to Valetta ( Malta ) is 2 turns, although Portsmouth to the Western Med in general is 1 turn. Portsmouth to the Eastern Med is two turns, and some of the missions are in there.
Moving ships out of the Med after missions does not help my power projection, no matter how many turns away they are.
Please, please stop this automatic repair mess, let us players decide where to go. And when we give the whole fleeet an order to leave and repair - they should do this and not stay, till they are outnumbered by this constant drain of ships repairing in harbours around the world. The ai leaves not to repair - they stay till they sink (and seem to be miracally repaired in one turn on sea):
I think it will be good game function if we can set up real fleets/ task forces, where ships are ordered to be fix part of it.
Please remove this automatic drive back to "random" port for player controlled task forces.
I have my task force, everything is defined, all my task forces should have same number of BB, CA, CL, DD, TB. And I want to decide what my captains do, because I'm the ADMIRAL.
And yesterday they started a battle with one TB. One DD lost a little bit of painting and the whole task force was back in port again. This is desertation! Court-martial!!
On the other hand I had a task force which was involved in a battle. Bad thing, I lost the battle and 50% of my task force. But this task force was still in front of the enemy port. I decided: OK, to much damage (and loss), drive home. Next turn, the task force was still in front of the enemy port and the overpowering enemy attacked my task force again. 4 turns later, this topic was "solved". All ships from my task force where sunken.
Summarize: On one hand all ships will be send home automatically, on the other hand I couldn't send my damaged task force back home.
Edit: 2hrs later, 3 battles, after 2 battles my task force was in a port, now after the 3rd battle my task force is still at the battle location (with more or less all ships got damage between 2-68%)
