I've currently got 29 ships in mothballed status, all but one are torpedo boats, and I've got 1800 people in my crew pool. I've got auto crew turned on.
I don't understand why it is like this or even what the point is of this weird, cumbersome, apparently broken mechanic. I've got my crew training maxed out - had it maxed out since day 1. What more does the game expect me to do?
Whoever heard of a navy of a major naval combatant less than a year into a war, which it is winning, not having enough crew to man its new ships? And how is a country that is losing going to have any hope of coming back? Even if they build new ships they won't be able to man them.
Does anyone actually like this thing with assigning crew? Not crew quality and training, but assigning crew? Do you enjoy it? Does it feel deep or realistic? I hope they remove it.
A work around is to click add crew on the effected ship and drag the crew numbers down until the status of the ship changes to "low crew". Confirm the change and the status of the ship will change in the fleet window to 'low crew'. The go back to the ship, add the crew back up to max compliment and it will be full active once more when you confirm that change.
Had the same drama, think it happens when a ship launches with out enough crew in the crew pool. Your reserves will top it up eventually if you have auto 'add crew' turned on in the fleet window but the status remains as mothballed when the ai adds the top up crew.
Even if you have the crew available and have auto crew on it will still set them to mothballed sometimes.
You can immediately just crew them as soon as they are built but yeah it's really annoying.
I understand why adding crew and taking crew off is a feature, because like in other 'ultimate' games this works really well, it's just not developed enough to seem good atm.
