Bayonets are handled strangely here
In the sense that the same musket with either spike, sword, or no bayonet are all treated as 3 different weapons. It would make more sense if you issued guns and bayonets to units separately.

There are no spike bayonets in the game... what you refer as spike bayonet, is actually socket bayonet... Spike bayonet was practically a dagger that was inserted into barrel, so once attached, musket was unable to fire...

The point is still that it is weird that if you want to issue bayonets to the crew to add to their muskets they actually turn in the guns, sell off the gun, then go buy the same gun back but with the bayonet attached. Instead of, your crew have the gun now you go to the store room and buy some bayonets only.

The buy/sell process losses money and possibly reputation also in the process.

Socket bayonets definitely existed at this time. This is the early 1800s we're talking about here, sockets have been in use for nearly a century - plug bayonets like you described went out of style in the early 1700s.

Yes, I did mean socket bayonets, but that's beside the point

Your thinking of Plug Bayonets. They were inserted into the barrel.
Next you had Ring Bayonets which was a spike with a hoop attachment point that allowed them to be screwed onto the end of the barrel and the gun could still be fired.
Later came Sword bayonets which attached in the same way as ring bayonets but when not attached to the gun could be used as a long knife/short sword depending on their length.

"Ring bayonet" and "Socket bayonet" are practically the same thing, with the latter having improved fixing slot in L shape so it would not detach in melee combat. Sword bayonet was developed for rifles, and during Napoleonic wars, practically only few Rifle-Carbines were actually using it (Baker RIfle was practically a carbine, with 30-32" barrel)

Anyway, personally, i think it would be best if Sword and Socket bayonets were made exclusive.. Sword bayonets would be only available with certain rifles, while socket bayonets would be only available with muskets.

I think the whole point of the post was that any type of sharp pointy thing on the end of the musket cannot be bought by itself.

If you want bayonets you have to research them (because they haven’t been invented yet), hand in your muskets that don’t have bayonets, buy whole new guns that have permanently fixed bayonets on them, which is limited to the quantity of guns available, pay full price for the gun and bayonets and possibly pay reputation to get them.

When really all you want to do is buy some bayonets only (lot cheaper) and add them to your existing weapons.
