ship upgrades

hi captains im interrested to hear what upgrades people use since
every time im looking at them the weight penalty makes my ships scream overload
even when i lover the crews to only ops insted of max

Try lower weight guns for starters like Woolwich or others. But gun carriage upgrades are the main opinion for increasing available weight.

i have started to mount the unified gun carriages (T2) but it still feels like i need to chose between armor a glass cannon or boarding abilitys

Depends on what your play style is going to be. I tend to install lower weight guns with same damage output, unified gun carriages and boarding equipment which allows me to carry maximum crew.

So I aim to board enemy ships and stern rake from close range so these basic upgrades work for me. Other options would be used for different combat style.

I don’t bother with better armour or many other options until later in game. If you are boarding with multiple ships on one enemy I find you don’t need much else.

Pretty universally Gunweight and Speed for my ships, makes room for bigger guns and allows me to control the fight.
Control the fight and you can just weaken them before boarding with minimal effort.

Edit: Plus its fun having a trio of 5th rates flying around at 15 knots loaded with 500 crew apiece.

Gun weight, hull repair, accuracy, reload - for line battles.

I don't use coppering. Takes too much room,. There are other less painful speed enhancements. Early, I go for boarding and gun carriages. Later, strong hulls for SOL slugfests.
