Marines on board
Wouldn't there be a small detachment of maries onboard a frigate? Would be awsome if we could have a unitslot onboard each frigate, maybe two or three onboard ships of the line.

I don't know the details, but the game does have marines that are on board ships (not sure which classifications of ships). Those marines can be disembarked and used in shore operations.

That's actually what I expected when I reseached the Royal Marines for 8300 :(. At least the crewstats should have improved then imho.
Of course better if at least the Ship of the Line had a complement of marines...

...and also, I just realised they are bloody expensive for their stats. So more of an aesthetical luxury than anything else ;)

When you land big enough crews there is often a pure marine unit in the group with the rest being the sailors.

Dedicated marine corps on the ship was something that typically happen on 4+ rate ships that had the room to dedicate for a formation of redcoats. Basically, for the longest time it was expected that sailors knew how to fight; while Spanish and British crews were starting to introduce dedicated combat teams on their ships for ships boarding and defense (both in response to piracy and the rising conflict between the two empires)

think Spain was the 1st to use marines on ships for boarding parties and shore raids. The Royal navy was 1 of the last to adopt marines. Marines were on loan from the army and trained in navel warfare. They had to learn how to sail a ship how to load and fire the ships guns. so when they boarded a ship they could sail it and help out if a battle was still going on or they would sail it to the closest freindly harbour.
That was to not take to many sailors away from the mothership.
Lots of ships got lost cause most of the crew went on land raiding partis or boarding enemy ships leaving them weak and vulnerlable. so marines were created for that reason.
