Is the game worth it?
For me Yes, absolutely. But it may not be the case for everybody.

• The game is immersive if you play stealthy. If you like such gameplay on large maps, then no doubt, this game is certainly for you.
  
• If you like to play gunslinger however, well ... the game will fight back very punitively (Being a bad boy causes a bad Karma that provide only disadvantages like less followers, more enemies patrol, less XPs...). Said differently, the game will "encourage" you to play stealthy anyways. So if you don't like such gameplay, I wouldn't recommend the game for you, you may just feel frustrated constantly.

Additionally, notice that the price tag is the one of a finished game, not really of an EA that still requires balancing/fixing/polishing. So, I would recommend you manage your expectations before buying. Considering the state of the game, I personally believe it deserves the price. But one may consider it's too expensive for an EA, that would be a valid opinion too.

Pros?

• The game is visually pleasant (Note: I play full graphical quality though).
  
• The map is just massive, hundreds of hours of gameplay in perspective.
  
• Game mechanics and gameplay are natural to understand, you can jump immediatly inside the game.
  
• There are a few glitches here and there,yes, but the quality is well above most of EA games I played.
  
• The camp system feels really good, you have the feeling to conquer the land and to grow your village capabilities (At least early game).

Cons/Adjustments?

• Fellow Indians are way, but way too dumb. They attack one after the other and get killed the very same way. It makes them pointless for anything else than gathering/crafting and even then, they may get killed by any patrol passing by.
  
• When the Karma goes deep in the dark side, settlers start to see/hear 20 meters in their back, and even over night ... This is perhaps exaggerated (?).
  
• The Karma doen't let you create your own experience, you have to be a nice budy protecting any form of life.

Suggestions?

• Add some benefits to have a bad Karma. I believe this is the main weakness so balancing this aspect would be, to me, invaluable for the game. For instance, it could be PNJ running away when they see you, recurrent free goods at merchant (Since they would "pay you're protection" :-D), a boost of offensive stats etc ...
  
• Perhaps a more ambush-indian-ish AI against a more frontal-cowboy-ish AI would allow some tactics and help the game immersion.
  
• The ability to order warriors to attack a given patrol would be nice.
  
• The way to capture a region is a bit limited (Kill/Intimidate/poison all Colonists). Maybe adding other mechanics would make the game less repetitive sometimes - I don't know, maybe quest based like "kidnapping a NPC VIP", "stealing a deed of ownership", "(re)buying lands to settlers with goods" or "threaten them if they refuse to leave".
  
• The UI of camp management is ok at first but gets tedious and clumsy late game with many camp (I personally deleted camps to work this around). Revamping this part may also help to improve the game.
  
• It's lacking an actual scenario/main quest - That's a pity :-).

A showstopper (For me at least)!
After capturing more than 50% of the map, the game started to crash every 30 minutes. I gave up the game because of that. I understand it's an EA and will eventually come back in a few months, but if this helps, I'm happy to provide config+save (Or whatever you want at your convenience) - Jus let me know.

My 2 cents,

I have enjoyed this game for many, many hours prior to the Steam early access release. The game is a third person stealth oriented action adventure pitting you, an indigenous native against foreign settlers. On a randomly generated large map you will need to eliminate enemies by lethal or non-lethal means from numerous camps/forts in order to liberate a map region and gain control of it. Gaining control of the entire map before the enemy is the end goal.

You earn experience points by defeating enemies, hunting and crafting, these points are then spent on skill upgrades and new crafting instructions. Crafting is done using gathered, hunted or scavenged items.

There is also a management system of your resistance where you upgrade your own camps to hold more warriors which can be used to gather resources, craft, patrol and attack. Don't be scared of the management bit, as it is intuitive and useful. It is also loads of fun to send a bunch of warriors to attack and you can show up to observe or participate. Karma in the form of violent or non-violent interactions also plays a role.

This is already too wordy so I'll conclude by saying it's not a AAA budget game with motion capture story cutscenes etc and compelling side missions. It relies on the open world sandbox and game loops to propel the player but If you fancy the idea of sneaking into enemy camps to intimidate or kill them camp by camp region by region and plays a little like Red Dead Redemption and Assassin's Creed then you'll want revenge on paleface.

P.S. There is a bit of a learning curve and it can be punishing at times so it's not an easy ride, but therein also lies the reward. Sometimes revenge is best served cold.

I'm leaving my initial thoughts at the top of this review as I believe you will feel similar at the same cadence, but am putting some updated thoughts after over doubling my playtime and actually testing out every bit of content the game has to offer.

This game is beautiful, it has some core mechanics that are very fun, but is ultimately ruined in particular by a forced down your throat karma system, and clunky mechanics. In this game you play as a native american who is openly hunted and shot on sight by every settler, there are no good ones. If you shoot back and kill them though, you are punished with higher trade prices and much much less warriors. The entire time I played this game I found myself asking "why is this antifun mechanic in?". If knocking out enemies was at all more feasible, and didn't take 11 (ELEVEN) seconds to "intimidate" (shake a flaming bag of sticks over their head after knocking them unconscious) then maybe I would consider at least playing, but the karma system is awful regardless. You would think that warriors would say "This chief is a great warrior he has killed many of the people who imprison and openly kill us on sight, we will follow him" but apparently... not?

The skill costs exponentially growing make late game even more repetitive as you can't even try out the other skills, I wanted to do everything this game had to offer and find a playstyle that I enjoyed, but the absolute insane skill cost inflation prevented that despite me restarting 4x with the explicit intent to try new play styles. ANTIFUN

You can't cancel reloads for certain weapons, if you reload while crouched you can't stand up, cancel the reload, roll, or sprint. So if an enemy rounds the corner while you're crouch reloading you just get gunned down while practically sitting still like an idiot.

There is virtually no information on this game readily available, some youtube videos explain the mechanics that are also (POORLY) explained in game. The user interface genuinely appears to be written by someone who's first language isn't English, many grammar mistakes and incomplete sentences that I genuinely don't understand (I'm not nitpicking! Mistakes are fine in beta but it's incomprehensible)

The sound design is literally worse than flash games I played in early 2000's, I can hear the static and the voice changer used on the white people's voice. The animations for the bow are the most unsatisfying, silly looking thing I've seen in a game. It INSTANTLY stands out from the absolutely gorgeous landscape as... sloppy.

Fall damage seems to be set so that no matter how little you fall, you hear your ankles snapping, even if it is 1 point of health out of your 2000 health pool your ankles still snap and your screen gets washed in blood, the damage feedback in this game is somewhat poor. I don't know if I was heavily damaged or lightly scratched (500 damage headshot, 1 damage scratch from falling 2cm).

Warrior management is unsatisfying and somewhat pointless. Why would I want warriors who can only kill enemies when killing enemies just ruins the game by preventing me from getting new warriors via renewable means? When I decided scr*w the karma system and relied on freeing warriors from prisons their inventory management was abysmal, I could hardly control what weapons they had, they kinda just mobbed me and stood in front of my gun in fights, they're useless for carrying resources, it's a pain in the a** to get the resources back from them (check every clones inventory while they run in circles around each other!)

Blueprints are far too rare and need a means of acquiring the ones that you want, there need to be new settlements that specialize in certain types of loot available for the player to raid (ammo cache, weapons transport etc.) as currently you just attack everything you see and loot people for tiny amounts of ammo each (this is fine just add somewhere to find more!)

I know the developers have stated that this game is supposed to be about the bigger picture, which is fine, but early game there is no big picture, it's me and two dudes who look suspiciously similar lol. Develop the war party system (PLEASE, A WAY TO MANAGE WAR PARTIES INVENTORIES), remove/fix the karma system, adjust minimum fall damage height, add organization to the camp inventories (filter by name? Filter by weight? Filter by type?) and the game will still admittedly be a little barebones, but all of the frustration I experienced will be resolved. Also it's never clarified what happens to your items when you die, if they were added to the camps loot, given to the person who killed you, anything that'd be nice.


I understand the game is early access, I assume the sound design and mechanics are placeholders because its too ridiculous to not be, but I had to include it for posterity. I would LOVE for the game to continue to be worked on, if this review is seen by developers please don't take anything that I said as an insult, I still somewhat enjoyed this game, and I can't wait to update this review to be a recommendation. I don't want this to be an actual essay if you guys need anything else from me feel free to add on here, I genuinely want this to be a great game.

After becoming more experienced with the game (much time spent purely offline, hours will be inaccurate) I won't be writing this update in a hopeful tone.

Content that is added is meaningless, the devs do not fix their broken core mechanics listed above and add "BOSSFIGHTS?". It's a slap in the face for a game charging this much. The only content that has been added other than bug fixes was a "dentist" that shoots at you with a semi automatic grenade launcher (wtf????) a friggin NINJA (?!?!?!) and a colonial commander (ACCEPTABLE!).

After playing long enough (10 hours or so tbh :/) you know every enemy camp configuration which is copy and pasted often clipping into the dirt or deleting some of the ground. It looks bad. It plays bad, the loot is in the ground, it ruins my immersion. Your warriors in the strategy map mode get stuck on invisible walls, you walk through visible walls, and not just a little bit. Imagine the edge of the grand canyon and just walked through it. Roughly ~10% of all rocks are not hitboxed correctly, you just walk through them.

After interacting on the discord with developers, looking at their twitter, reading all of the dev updates, it is clear that someone there speaks English, why are item descriptions still in this state where I genuinely don't know what they do? It's embarrassing.

The ai is beyond abusable. If you don't have the willpower to not abuse them (go in third person and become unshootable while shooting through solid objects as the projectile fires between your cam and your model) then you will immediately discover the raw grind that is thinly masked.

Dev interaction is beyond superficial. I was hoping that this was the kind of small studio that could interact with the playerbase and GET THINGS DONE! Nope, it's all bogus. I have no hope for this game.

You can dupe, it takes literally 5 seconds. It's well known, everyone does it. You can dupe everything, you can just straight dupe the CURRENCY. It's undetectable, it's unsolvable in the games current state. The economy will either be permanently ruined or they will force wipe your save game.

Its ruined. Pack up. Go home..

Word of Warning - There is no end-game, there is no way to 'win'.

In this game's current state, you cannot control all territory, you cannot defeat 'the enemy' outright. Instead, you are caught in a never ending loop of enemy settlements appearing in your controlled territory (without warning) and at a rate that far exceeds your ability to reinforce any lost manpower.

Player townships and the territory they are located in (which are not able to be liberated or destroyed) are the spawn points for the enemies continued and never ending sprawl. The number of these settlements can range from 1 to 3+ in a randomly generated open world through each play-through. I will say this though, the immersive environments of each reactive open world is the best feature of this title.

So, much like American History has taught us, this game plays out the colonization of Native America in a brutal and never ending onslaught of bloodshed and slavery.

I'll correct my earlier statement: There is an end-game - as Chief of a Native American tribe, you lose.

This game is a combo of Sniper Elite 4, mount and blade war band, and Risk. This is an absolute recommend to buy. This game is essentially a race against time. There a very few bugs, in my 268 hrs i have had 1 crash and 1 glitch that was annoying. The controls are intuitive and functional. What i have found disappointing is the lack of external you-tube videos which are all out of date that don't show current game aspects of player creation.
That said the player creation is truly unique with names impacting your starting stats for you and your horse, which change on the 1st of the month (if you use the same name over again it will come with the same starting stats, provided you pick the same animal again). There are no videos saying how to win this game.

Your goal is to drive the whiteman from your lands but the logistical how to is missing from any guides.... so i will give you the answer here. Target population centers and the logistical network. The game starts you in 1 village vs 2-4 towns. I have had the greatest success going straight for the enemy towns and knocking them out as quickly as possible, but you should not knock out the last town as a new one will pop up somewhere else. To win you will need 100% coverage of all lands with a strong village, and getting there will take about 48 hrs at a minimum to get to that point. You don't win by going out and doing all the killing yourself, you must command your tribe to do it. That said the game i won, I only killed 2 people... which were accidents. If you don't kill people but drug them and have your way with them in the woods, you will have good Karma. Good Karma gets you lots of manpower quickly vs killing every enemy. The enemy will get paranoid with better situational awareness and start hunting your villages if you have bad karma.


Key to winning is developing your chief skills, things like improving your tribe abilities will be what you need to expand and take the map. Putting all your skill points in to combat skills will ultimately be fruitless as each skill you picks makes the next more costly.

The enemy has different types of places which have logistical importance. Farms make food which serves as a driver of population growth and food serves a healing potion. Taking note of the food types your enemy is using will tell you if there is a farm in the area. Wood Camps give the enemy more construction material to build there towns, forts, farms, and wagons. No wood and they grow slower. Forts and bivouacs secure areas, and depending on the type can be a real tough nut to crack. Camps can hunt local animals. The enemy is populated like this 20-30 towns, 15-20 forts, Farms 15-20, Wood Camps 10-15, Camps 3-10, Patrols 5. If you don't get the enemy down to 1 town at the start of the game they will be able to out grow you when they have 30% of the map.

You can play flawlessly and still lose if you don't control the expansion by targeted strikes, not every location needs an attack by you, you can order your braves to attack, and this is recommended for the small population locations. You should go after the tough nuts which would slaughter your braves like forts and towns.

Bottom line I recommend you look at the reviews from players that have long and short amounts of playtime. The negative votes for this game have very little amounts of time because this game is tough. Getting dropped in combat gives the enemy more time to expand while you recover and that in itself is a game lose, you can try after that point but the effects are cumulative and will tilt you towards getting overrun. The save function for this game is only in an IRONMAN mode, no free for all save scumming here. If you are a casual gamer then again this game may not be for you. This game puts you up to your eyeballs running an insurgency and if you want to try that without going to Afghanistan then this is your game.

I starved to death while the women repeated food preparation animations and the well armed men gathered more wood after I ordered them to get meat..

So I ordered them to use horses after which they stood kind of half inside the horse and stayed frozen there..

I bled to death in less than 7 seconds while attempting to bandage my only injury, a small puncture on my hand..

My 2 bands of level 5 warriors, 8 men armed with rifles and pistols that failed repeatedly to respond to Attack and Return Fire commands, were all killed in less than a minute by 2 level 2 enemies with makeshift clubs..

I am the chief of an indigenous tribe that has no idea what is just over the hill in any direction..

I am from the group of people who invented fish hooks but I have to shoot fish circling at my feet with a bow or gun when they could easily be scooped up by hand..

This list of features is by no means exhaustive. My 10 hours in the game might be my last, barring a serious overhaul of feature accessibility. So why recommend it? Because this game is mightily ambitious. It does a lot that reveals itself over time. Like many survival games, it seems bare-boned at first but really opens up upon exploration and discovery. The game world and player's character are very well made, animations for him are smooth and efficient. Horse riding is fun and easy. The game shines best as a third person exploration and craft-em-up with light combat mechanics. But the game limits what can be achieved playing this way, so that tribe management via menus and UI is immediately necessary for your own survival. While you are learning how to do this, you will die in a wide variety of ridiculously ironic ways.

There is an embarrassment of wealth in UI options for player control of the tribe. There are often multiple ways to go about performing the same action. After 10 hours I was still learning the UI and menu navigation, a trial and error process that became the game-play itself. You will be managing much more from the menus than you will from your presence and interactions in the world. It's rather like a board game or card collector where the 3D world was an afterthought. Combat feels tacked on and paper thin. I could easily head-shot a whole outpost of armed men with the game's starter bow and small pointy sticks, but my 8 seasoned warriors with shotguns and rifles fight like fish in a barrel, a school of confused minnows milling about and bumping into each other. In such a state they are easily picked off in a matter of a minute or two. But friendly AI can be repaired and I hope it will be.

Overall, what is an extremely ambitious (and much needed imo) run at World Management from the perspective of Native Americans during colonial expansion, ultimately falters under the weight of its own complexity and clunky user interface. Yes, I died of thirst in the pouring rain. But it was my own stupid fault for not seeing the rain bucket by the tepee entrance in time. And when I did after that, I over drank and received de-buffs. The game punishes you for not knowing anything at all, while requiring that you do, and not teaching you much along the way. I imagine it could take upwards of 20 hours to achieve a stable tribe and to get a comprehensive handle on the interface. It can be done as it is. The game works. But the investment prior to the fun is not balanced well enough for the price tag.

This is Game-Labs first swing at it, and while this release is not quite a home-run, they have a Grande Slam in them, I just know it. This game, if nothing else, is proof that they can do it. I will follow and watch and wait while they work, and wonder what they may do now. My wallet will always be open for such lofty and worthy endeavors.

Big things have small beginnings, but pick it up half off.

I purchased this game long before it hit steam so my hours likely number in the thousands. In anycase reading some of the reviews here I felt the need to chime in. The game is NOT as buggy as people are leading on, in fact I have been playing for years and have yet to be teleported, fall through a map, have things vanish or any such thing, a problem on your end does not constitute a problem on the game end. I see people complain about quests failing for no reason....also FALSE. This land is a living breathing world, NPCS don't sit around doing nothing, they gather wood, attack indigenous camps who have yet to join you, hunt, gather etc. So if you leave a quest where you have to interrogate NPC X and you get a message it failed...then he has died to bears, wolves, angry first nations or any other plethora of things that can kill you. Players must realize the game world is constant all around you, not sitting static waiting for you to show up. I think this is one of its greatest points!

The game is also super sandbox, you don't have to follow quests, be nice, be murderous or anything else...you can settle camps let your warriors hunt for you and sit by a fire craftng all day if thats your thing, or you can go all Rambo and lone wolf it killing every settler you find, or take a huge war party and run down everything you see. Very flexible gamplay wise. I see complaints about people being snipers and such, again nonsense. If you engage people with guns at close range of course it will be easy to hit you with a gun at 10 feet away....I use a warbow at long range and settler rifles are extremely inaccurate at range, especially using skills like detect enemy or marking them with a spyglass so you know where everyone is ahead of time....you can't run in guns blazing, this isn't CoD. With regards to looting and "taking a long time" you can give commands to your camps to loot any site you have cleared out, you really don't have to lift a finger if you don't want to (just note warriors won't loot schematics so look for those at least) As for the encroachment of settlers and being forced to give up land.....uh...yes, because that is historically accurate. The First Nations don't win this war, it's the terrible crime of colonization thats the point....so if it makes you mad in a game that pretend territory is wrested away imagine how the real people feel and felt. As long as you have a single camp standing though the fight continues so don't let territory be your compass for "winning" it's a game of resistance not conquering.

The graphics, environments and effects are also excellent, alot of care was put into crafting this game. Continued improvements, camp management, warrior management, warpaints, horse customization, character appearance options (through paint and accessories) never existed before I took a break and I'm glad to see things implemented like that. Ultimately this game is certainly worth the price, it can be REALLY frustrating at times yes, but thats only usually if you are being careless. If you enjoy games of stealth, planning and hit and run/ ambush tactics then you will not be disappointed....if you plan on playing like battlefornt 2 you should probably move on. I would certainly recommend this game and HIGHLY recommend reading up on tips and guides. You will for sure find yourself logging in for more, and to settle a score when everything goes south and you get a revenge target :D

I'm Cherokee and I'm a disabled American war vet. I play mostly simulation games, and I would count this as more of a simulation than anything. The graphics are next level as are the interface and gameplay. I loved this game so much that in the first week of playing I bought a copy for my sons and some other vets. I see mixed reviews by people who are angry about the dev pace and / or the fact that the devs are Ukrainian. If you're one of those people that expect flawless software, I'd recommend you play simple games. TLiML is not simple. Its biggest flaw may be that it's overly ambitious, but I'm glad that it is. I may be biased because of my heritage, but I find this to be one of the most immersive and interesting titles I've ever purchased. I'll be watching Game-Labs to see what they produce in the future. TLiML is an outstanding title that I highly recommend. If you haven't tried it yet, just make sure you go into it knowing that it's as complex as it is vast. Be patient and enjoy yourself.

15 hours in, I haven't seen a single bug. Very relaxing, usually slow-paced game, at least the way I'm playing it. Reminds me of Skyrim hunting/gathering outside White Run. Lots of skills to learn. Nice soundtrack.

A lot of the negative reviews are simply complaints from newbies not knowing the right way to do things. This game is very hard to learn. So just don't start on the middle difficulty. And when you do start on the lowest difficulty, don't complain the game is too simple. Low difficulty completely removes a lot of the survival elements. Also, level up your skills a bit before diving into missions. The game pushes you to go do things before you're ready. This isn't the easiest game to figure out how to play it. Then again, it isn't horrible. Wiki kinda sucks, but in-game chat is great resource! People are helpful (if slow to respond). While you can play hack-&-slash, this game does offer a very interesting alternative: a stealth-&-intimidation path for a major change of pace which I find long overdue in this genre.

Overall 8/10. I expect well over 100 hours of play before I tire of this one. Save often, I hear there are bugs, just haven't seen any yet. Also, devs are Ukrainian, so yeah.

[Edit] After 55 hours, I can see this game has much more depth than I first realized. I'm finally getting into MID-game. Gathering stuff in the woods like in Skyrim is NOT what this game is about. Assign the warriors to gather stuff. The Chief has bigger issues in mind. After learning the basics, you start to zoom out literally and spend more time looking at the big map. And in between, spend a few hours zoomed in, eliminating enemy logging camps, forts, etc. Attack the 15 person settlement alone in non-lethal stealth mode and spend 2 hours picking them off 1 by 1. Or rush in with a war party and do it quicker. Up to you. Build new camps for your people and take over the map/world. Very high replayability as there are many options when setting up your next game. Deep game. 9/10

[Edit] After 500 hours, I'm ready to move on, but can't find another game to inspire me to leave, so I keep playing. Definitely got my money's worth. 8.6/10

[Edit 2024] After 1000 hours, this game is still great. I don't understand most of the negative reviews on Steam these days. Most of them are flat out false and written by someone with less than a dozen hours. Don't be fooled; this game rocks, assuming you can handle a challenge. I like a challenge. I play Kerbal Space Program. I play most games in Hardcore mode. I have an advanced degree. This game delivers challenge (with the hard settings) and is pretty well polished and has very few significant bugs. Yes there is duping. So what? It is a single player game!! You don't like duping? Don't dupe. Problem fixed! Steam Charts says about 200 people are basically always playing this game currently. Years out, this game must be doing something right to achieve that. Believe Steam Charts over the negative reviews written by scrubs with 4 hours in-game who say this game is broken or worse. Still 8.6/10 And again, the Devs are Ukranian. So yeah, maybe add a little bonus to that number.

This is a game with a ton of potential that is just not very playable in its current state.

What really needs to be fixed above everything else are the random times where you are magically lifted off of the ground 50 feet into the air and dropped because you walked too close to a tall tree. You lose about half your health and if you don't have any skill in herbalism you have to sit and eat meat for 5000 years to heal up.

Enemy AI is atrocious right now. Half of the people stand in place doing nothing, a quarter walk around in random patterns always within 5 feet of someone else, the other quarter do a task but randomly stop, spin 360 degrees, and then do their task again. This happens for 24 hours straight (game time). Occasionally someone will sleep and when they do, 90% of their bodies disappear into the ground. You almost walk over them before you notice there's someone sleeping on the ground. In one bizarre instance I was working on killing a small workers camp. Every time I killed someone, I stealthily dragged their body down under a cliff by a river. No one ever saw me do this. One of the camp members then started to walk away from the camp in the exact direction of my pile of bodies. I thought to myself, "There's no way he's going to walk straight to those bodies. He might stand on the cliff, but not go directly to the bodies." You can guess what happened next... He literally walked to where I stashed my bodies and alerted the rest of the people in the camp.

Stealth is a joke. Even when walking in the dead of night while sneaking, enemies seemingly are fully aware of your presence. If one person is awake at night (and there's usually one braindead guy walking into another sleeping person, just stuck there), trying to stealth kill is just incredibly hard. Even if you stealth kill someone while they are asleep, it wakes everyone else in the camp up. There's also a bug I had where the person I was supposed to interrogate was walking at a very slow speed and was turned and facing my direction, but never could see me. This went on for about 5 minutes so I had to just sit there and wait until he stopped, gave up, and finally did something else so I could almost sneak up on him to interrogate him.

I would also take out the requirement of typing "delete" when you want to delete a save. I tried and the game would minimize the window by the time I typed "de", and I'm a fairly fast typist. Clicking "Delete" and confirming it should be enough.

Most of the rest of the game is okay. It's not standing out to me in any way. It takes a different approach to the survival genre that could be interesting given a couple more years of development. I don't want the project to become abandoned because they could not get enough funding, but I am not all together sure I could recommend people get this game in its current state. I hate relying on the "potential" of games since I have been burned by Early Access way too many times. If you like the developers' vision for the game, I guess you can buy it and hold it in your library for a while to see if it goes anywhere. If not, I'd wait until the game gets better.
