how do you play offline?
I tried launching Steam in offline mode, launching it without Steam, and even shutting off my Internet connection. It still asks me to log in on the main menu, and I don't see an option to skip that.

Sounds like you are not starting the game from the Steam library. If you start it from the library, it will not ask you to log in.

Same "problem" here
Steam in offline-mode, starting the game (bought it on EA-day in steam) and I get asked to enter my social tag. Doesn't matter if I enter one or not -> "general error (1) when authenticating with steam, please exit the game and restart steam".
Only thing is: I can't exit the game (except via taskmanager) with this mask showing up.

Playing online works flawless though.
btw: great game so far, not much time played, not really a clue what to do and how to do it ;), but I really like it

Setting steam in offline mode doesn't work. Because the game will see and connect to the internet and tries to authenticate through steam and steams says it cannot because it is offline so it cannot work. So to play offline completely, you need to be offline COMPLETELY.

I don't have the game yet, but plan to get it later today.

As for the trouble to start the game in offline mode, I'd suggest to open a topic and stick it so that anyone can find it.
When you say one has to start the game from the Steam library does it mean that offline mode does not work when starting the game from the desktop? It would be an rather awkward way to start a game.

So, as far as I understand, to start and play the game in offline mode you are required

1. to completely disconnect your PC from the internet (i.e. switch off the network cable)
2. start the game from the Steam library (starting from the desktop as with any other game would not work)

Is this correct?

If it is so, imho, it's a really awkward method to start and play a game.

Thanks!

Not for all. What I mentioned is the fix if you experience this issue. Mostly first-time game issue and not after that.
lol, you have to block the f:handsy::handsy::handsy::handsy::handsy::handsy: game on your firewall to play in offline mode. What next? I'll have to crack the game I buy to be able to play them how I want? BS.

No, you do not. You are reading a post from 2019 by the way.

There is a button on the main menu to play offline or online.

Why wouldn't you want to play online, I mean it's singleplayer and you can trade etc with others and help others, and they can help you.

Yeah, I would think the same as well. But you will be surprised that some do not wish to do that for one reason or another. Some by choice while others due to means of internet access/data use.

I instantly refunded the game because of this, couldn't get past the main menu without creating a social tag.

Why should we have to make a unchangeable social tag to play a primarily single player game?!

The answer is easy, disable this option by default (instead have a enable multiplayer elements function option in the game settings), social tag should then just be your steam profile name.

I really dislike binding names to accounts, Ubisoft were the worst for this and their legacy names etc.
