If I just wander on the world map, will I trigger random encounters?
I'm having fun with the combat and wouldn't mind tackling a few extra combat encounters. I haven't seen anything non-scripted yet (PC just reached level 5), but I'm just wondering how this mechanic works.

If I just walk along the road back and forth, will I eventually encounter a battle?

Also, is there any reason to worry about the passage of time in this game?

There are random battles, not sure if they are less common on roads but it felt I had more walking around everywhere else. Time does not really do anything, beside telling you how many days you took at the end of the game.

Yep infinite random battles. No time limit. Burning time can be good if you want to force merchants to restock - Which you'll likely be doing a lot if you have more than one Ranger in your team.

If you simply want to change a merchant's inventory you can just save/load before going to the purchase menu. Its not generated until you access that menu.
