So my question is, if I put 1 point into a magic school, why can't I learn any spells from books for that level? I.e. my champion has 1 point in mind magic, and it reads, "You can now cast level 1 mind magic spells." I have a level 1 book(aura of fear), but it's still not usable.

One point in the school doesn't unlock anything. You only gain the ability to cast (and learn) spells of that school of that level once you put in all the points required, in this case 3.

God dang it. I've lost a point then. >:[ It should be specified, "Upon completion of this rank, you can now cast level 1 mind magic spells."

I mean the interface kinda does tho? <<

You get 3 points every level up. Its expected that you will either hold points or partially spend them on some levels. Particularly for magic due to later ranks requiring 4, 5, and 6 feat points.

It does follow from how the Feats work (i.e. you don't get anything until you complete a grouping of feat ranks), but I can see how one might be confused if you're distributing the first points on your first character.

Anyway you haven't "lost" a point, you just need to fill in the rest next level.

If I went arms master and put 1 point into light armor, the medium armor slot opens up. I am a mostly physical party. I expected magic to do the same. I thought I wouldn't get the +2 spells if i did not do a full devotion, so I decided to put a point in bc I had books.

It says how many points you need to unlock a rank on the right when you click on each tier, with the little pips as a further bit of visual indication? And you can remove points during level up by right clicking, in case that helps.

But you can just fill in the remainder next time you level up. They’re not lost.

The physical feats work the exact same way, you don't get any benefit from the feat, nor do you unlock the next tier, until you meet the first rank threshold. The only difference is that for all the physical feats that first threshold is the first rank, while the first threshold for Magic feats is total investment. You can see this in the little marks (or "pips") on the side of each feat.

There is also a second benefit shown for the magic feats, "Mind Magic Focus" (or Spirit Magic or whatever). That's what actually enables you to cast level 1/2/etc. Mind Magic spells, by increasing your Mind Magic School level. (I think this is a bit obtuse, frankly, and would prefer if each of those feats just increased X Magic School by 1 directly, without the "Focus" obscuring what that part does.)
