Though at the start of the game it says that you need to pick up the lantern to spot the hidden container for the anti-disease potion.
I think it's just meant to be an alternate to using a torch/lantern.
Then I found out:
1) lanterns are common
2) you can't even cast Illumination outside of combat
edit: just kidding, i retried and you can illuminate yourself when exploring. idk why i couldn't earlier. my opinion remains that this is a trap unless i find out there's something more interesting to put in the lantern slot.
3) Illuminating an enemy in combat still costs an action and doesn't even appear to help you hit them
The spell is a total trap. If there's a way I can drop it from my Mage's spell list I'd love to know.
