Just MC. I believe you can create other mercenary characters later, but I'm currently only running with the two characters I've picked up.

cool! Are the other character randomly generated? That's neat too.

The characters I've gotten so far don't appear to be randomly generated, they have backstories so they've probably all got set classes as well.

For the mercenaries you can hire, you apparently can just create the characters you want in terms of class/skills/etc but I haven't gotten that far yet so I can't give any more specifics.

There are both, you run into pre-made characters with their own backstories and you can also run across mercenaries you can hire which are fully customizable.

If you havent already heres a tip. The very first person you run into is a thief. I recommend not starting as one. I had the misfortune of doing just that on my first launch.

Me too, though tandem backstabbing obliterates enemies, so it has it's uses.

Having two thieves is awesome though. They can get feats that allow them to freely move through threatening squares and swap places with allies, and can backstab simply by flanking. Movement is king, and the thief is the king of movement.

I have not fully understood backstab yet. Like they need to be vulnerable or Flanked. But does the positioning for flank matter or does it just need 2 people near them? Do they need to be on opposite sides? Because it kind of seems like it.

I think two thieves can be great fun. As long as you are willing to feel out the backstabbing mechanic. Use one thief for ranged, one for melee. Buff the melee one with strength buff.

Enemies can be backstabbed WITHOUT HIDING from any side, or with arrows, when they have the small red arrow over them. This is triggered by having an enemy on opposite sides. Which can also be a summoned ooze.

Enemies can also be backstabbed WITHOUT HIDING when they have one of a number of conditions - certainly stun, and I think panic and fear included.

Enemies can be backstabbed WITH HIDING regardless of condition as long as you are still hidden when you attack them. The problem with melee backstab is that sometimes you lose stealth as you move into the square next to the enemies. So ranged backstab is the safest but seems to do less damage.

So thief synergises well with:

Earth tier 3 mage - Summon Ooze, ties down enemies and helps get the flanked modifier
Ranger (Nature level 1) or Divine caster (Body level 1) - Strength buff for +2 to hit
Air tier 3 mage - Poison sphere - stuns an area of enemies - so you can backstab them
possibly spirit with big aura, Fear aura spell - still not 100% sure if fear is a backstabbabble condition

It's wishlisted. I knew it was a must buy (but even items on my wishlist on sale are, but I ain't rich) even if every character was set I LOVE the pixel graphics but with the modern frame rate and juxtiposing them together. More games are doing this in different ways and rpgs doing it is just a good idea.
