Clubs have two types of stun which is really useful
Axes have damage / critical strike specials
Swords have better defense / bleed on damage
Overall I found clubs to be more useful since stuns special magic or ability seems to even work on boss enemies.
I ended up going with clubs for a MC fighter for the stun and focusing Roland on the Axe tree
The axe "top skill", decapitation, does not trigger a cooldown. This means you can use critical strike (for armsman) or "attack" command for Officer.
Also enemies who become fearful can get backstabbed. So you may be able to do two backstabs even.
For armsman, Greataxe benefits from both axe and 2h-tree, and you get Cleave as well. For officer, there's melee accuracy.
Armsman backed by officer can potentially get 4 attacks maybe - Officer-buff, regular attack, critical strike cooldown attack, cleave attack.
Club stun is great early game, but critical strike might just be better. Not sure.
The key thing is that club and sword top skills are cooldown, competing with Critical Strike. Axe isn't.
The added advantage is decapitation is a passive ability so it's really handy at chain routing enemies that aren't immune to fear
Local neighborhood mans discovers one weird trick, crabs hate it!
So for max damage with multi-attack, do a regular attack and then end with special attack.
