This is a you problem.
In fairness, Ultima had always tied its gameplay into what came with the box. The games were (I believe in all cases, but its been a long time since I played them) unplayble without them. The map offered needed instructions, the books offered required info like lore, directions, magic details etc.
Skald doesn't have that. You don't need any of that. I AM in the camp that a map would be nice, one that fills out as you explore. Perhaps needing you to find a map item, maybe ink etc too. But the game is perfectly, 100% playable without a map. Its designed not to need one.
Unfortunately sometimes they can be a bit condescending when saying that to others who do like maps.
I have played tons of early computer games without a map. It was fun using graph paper.
Then auto mapping was introduced to computer games and that was fantastic. I felt it was such a user friendly addition.
These days I tend to get easily frustrated if I play the style of games I like without a map.
I like to play games for fun instead and not waste time backtracking because I'm lost or I missed an explorable area.
Oh yes, definitely it is a "me" problem..... but "me" is all I have.
I played MANY a game back in the 70s and 80s where I had to draw my own maps on graph paper. That was fun. But now we have auto-map, so why go back to that tediousness.
I also loved my 8-track tapes and cassettes that I had to rewind and fast forward very slowly all the time. Doesn't mean I want to go back to them because we now have CDs and streaming where we can quickly move to whatever track we want.
For the nostalgia, Some people like it, some don't. Some people can also have a map in their head. I haven't gotten far enough in this game yet to need a map, so I cannot truly comment on if I want one yet or not. But either way, I think I'll live, lol... as I do enjoy feeling nostalgic. I'll draw a map if needed. Its fun. It's creative.
To ask a game trying to recreate a time gone-by but expect it to cater to new systems, well... you might as well ask why it doesn't have better graphics, run on Unreal 5, and have raytracing. That's my point of view anyway. =) Enjoy~
There's not even a world map for the game for when you travel between towns.
The game should include modern Quality of Life features like automap and would also remove frustration from some of the more annoying maze levels like the sewer.
Personally I'm fine without automap in this game, but there are people that have huge problems with orientation in general who could use some mapping functionality here.
Though I don't know if it is only included with the DLC.
Looks like there are 2 actually. One with spoilers, one without.
