Presence for Diplomacy
Strength for Mace thus can ignore Dodge long term for heavy armor
Has healing and some decent party buffs
Can wear heavy armor
My preference was going Toughness 2 Strength 3 Presence 3.
The class has no use for aptitude and DC in general, but in exchange it focuses on heals and buffs. With high diplo, decent athletics and decent awareness? To me it sounds like an optimal first playthrough class.
Only disadvantage? Maces. Effing hate those things.
Forgot to mention: Full Strength spell tree, basic spells for blessing and the like.
Enough shield feats to be tanky mixed with support. No DPS by any means, but better than the lackluster champion feats while not expecting you to use light armor as a freaking cleric.
From looking at the Demo, Champion seems to be a competitor to Officer in being a "leader" class warrior with the ability to buff and no real access to bows. It would be nice to know what its spells actually do. Champion's job is probably to be the best tank, perhaps with the hope that its spells let it become a specialist striker. Or it may end up being the front-line healer (instead of Hospitaler).
I was a Hierophant in the Demo. Yay, I actually hit stuff.
I have a question before I guy. That crazy Battlemagos class, look I love, love LOVE using physical attacks with Mages, but is it actually worthwhile to skill them up with weapons in this game?
I'm three hours into a battlemagos playthrough. You don't have enough attunement to spam spells in the early game, and the fire spells tend to be close-ish range. So yeah, looks like the class steers you into a light blade or ranged build.
About to start a Battlemagos. What are your attributes looking like? I guess 4 int but where should the other points go. maybe 3 in and 2 in strength and 3 in agility or vitality
Ah. So basically a low level mage who's not spending every turn passing and who actually bothers to hit things even once he gets to high levels. I'll try it.
Sadly, it's not very good. I tried it, out of curiosity, and have found it to be underwhelming. If you want to survive the early game difficulty curve, you're better off starting with a Cleric or Fighter class.
This thread discusses the issue:

This is my issue with the Battlemagos. You can't really cast more than 2 to 3 spells at your starting level and are forced into melee, especially in the opening parts of Chapter 1, where he/she is simply a mediocre fighter.
In short, he can't rely on magic and can't fight very well. And until you find Roland, no one can really tank (Kat isn't built for that role either).
