OVR Toolkit

OVR Toolkit

Finally, a good virtual monitor overlay for SteamVR!
I've gone through a lot of them now, and they've *all* sucked. Until I came across this one. Thank you for actually putting in a *tutorial* on how to use it. What a novel concept, describing how to use a tool. Can't say that's very common across all of the overlay apps out there.

I ended up using this for several hours today building in Rec Room. It's been great!

some quick feedback though, and I don't know if this is a bug, or user error but:
I tried to reposition the desktop screen for my left hand. Once I placed it in a position, then turned off edit mode, that screen would typically stay there for a while. But then suddenly for some reason its position would just reset. I couldn't figure out if there was some kind of locking option I needed to check that I missed or what, but it was fairly frustrating to perfectly position this window in the palm of my hand, and then be able to work for a while and then suddenly notice it popping up unexpectedly because it had suddenly decided to reset its position on me.

Would *really* love to have a keyboard pinned along with that desktop view on my hand, btw!

A scaling mode for the desktop would be awesome, if possible. The resolution of my desktop is 2K, and when viewed on a smaller screen over my hand, visibility of text is really difficult. I found I needed to zoom my browser window a lot in order to see anything.

What does the thumbtack icon mean? And what are its two different states? I couldn't really figure that one out.

A really great app though. I hope to see more developments from it in the future!

Hey there!

Thanks for the positive feedback! :)

It does seem like you've found a bug though! It's possible as the window is so close to your hand, when opening/closing edit mode, you're accidentally moving the window slightly in the process! I'm looking into a solution for this, I do it sometimes too.

What are your thoughts on how scaling would work? Zoom around where the cursor is maybe?

Also, the thumbtack/pin icon is for pinning windows! When windows are pinned, they are visible when edit mode is closed, when they're unpinned, they're only visible with edit mode open.
For example, you could have Twitch chat pinned so it's always visible, but OBS unpinned so it's only visible when you want to see it! :)

I play a lot of Rec Room, and one of the mechanics is flying, which is controlled (for VICs at least) by pressing and holding on the vertical trackpad. I'm wondering if a combination of frequently pressing this, while also gripping is somehow triggering the display to move, even when its not visible. It's not often, but it does seem automatic in how it moves, and not something like accidentally moving the screen periodically. Something seems to be triggering a "reset" of some kind for the hand-held screen.

Physically touching buttons over laser pointing them would also be a nice addition. Would definitely make the keyboard easier to use. This might be the long hours of Rec Room talking, but its what i'm most comfortable with, and OVRTK feels very familiar, so I start looking for the same kind of mechanics in it as Rec Room.

As for zoom, if its possible to force the desktop, or the current display to be a smaller resolution, which would in turn force the browser to scale as well as text to scale up, that would be ideal. I can't imagine a magnified view paired with the laser pointer to be enough to be comfortable.

I'll look into issues with windows/the wrist overlay being accidentally moved! :)

As for the keyboard, we can't do this unfortunately! The overlays will *always* display on top of your hands in games, of which your hands in game don't even line up with hands in OVR Toolkit as it's different per-app! But yeah, it would be neat. :(

As for zooming, it's a little complicated really! I wouldn't want a magnifying glass either, but, we also can't really change the resolution of anything. It'd cause flickers in the headset, and just generally be a real pain. It's a hard problem to work around.
The 'best' solution is what Oculus does, just make the windows huge and really close!
