I've been maining this game on controller for over 70 hours of play...
I don't think anything needs to be fixed.
I may be one of the few people who doesn't want Reiza to touch anything on the controller because it's pretty good. Maybe it's because I play with the Dualsense.
If you play using tap steer PCars2 and AMS2 work well (according to posts by Ian bell in the official PCars forum controller support in those games was design for tap steer players who use assists).
For people like me who play using precision steering, realistic assists, and like super-responsive controls PCars2 is terrible and AMS2 is slightly better than PCars2. The built-in controller filters that cannot be turned off and cause input lag are a nightmare. The in-game wheel never moves as fast as I want or go as far as I want, the built-in controller filters always numb down my inputs and make quick small corrections very difficult to perform.
It's possible to kind of get used to AMS2 controls after practicing for a while but it isn't anywhere as good as AMS1 imo. I find AMS1 way more fun to play with my Xbox 360 controller because I can disable all controller filters, dampers, deadzones, helpers, enable raw input, and fine tune from there and get very responsive lag-free controls, and the controller vibration in AMS1 is very helpful to feel curbs and when the car is about to lose traction.
Myself and others have posted many times in the official Reiza forums about the controller issues, developers said they'll work on controller support at some point but it doesn't seem to be a priority now or in the near future.
At the moment there's nothing we players can do to fix issues with controller, there's no controller setting that will get rid of the filters and input delay caused by them, there's no way to make controller more responsive, there's no way to get proper controller vibration. If you can't get used to the current controller support you're out of luck and have to wait until Reiza implements better controller support.
I have several different controller schemes that I've tried. Some better than other.
For example, try this
https://solox.gg/automobilista-2-controller-settings/
I've done a lot of testing in AMS2 as well as in many other games. In AMS2 even with controller damping at 0, speed sensitivity at 0, all deadzones at 0, there's still filters that cause input lag, slow down steering, and limit how far I can turn the in-game wheel. This happens both with controller set as controller and with controller set as custom wheel. This has been confirmed by many players in the official Reiza forums. Same goes for controller vibration, many players have confirmed in the official Reiza forums that in PCars2 & AMS2 controller vibration is almost non-existent even if you set controller vibration to 100 in-game.
If you like the way controller support in implemented in AMS2 and are enjoying the game as is that's good, but that doesn't change the fact that controller support in AMS2 is not anywhere near as good as it was in AMS1.
BTW here's the controller settings I use for my Xbox 360 controller, realistic assists, precision steering:
