What I will say is you WILL find something much, MUCH better and there's PLENTY to enjoy.
The GT cars are great, GT1-5 as are the prototypes (P-class), even the Copa Classics are a hoot for close battles.
There's plenty of so-so cars that you may not be interested in that can put a massive grin on your face.
Loads of Open wheelers from the Lotus 49 era to the recently added Formula Ultimate Gen 2 (2022 F1 cars without the official licensing, though you CAN change the names of AI drivers
I enjoyed PC2 but never got sucked in to it as I used to with Arcade racers like the Original Grid, think I only ever played 65 hours or so of PC2 as it was so inconsistent, some cars were a joy to drive others a complete pig, Many cars didn't get the love they deserved so were erratic at best, that and most people I know didn't own the game.
Player numbers aren't great but they're 4-5 times the numbers playing PC3, GRID 2019 or Grid Legends and the numbers are rising every month.
Whilst it's NOT perfect, it can be great fun to play and I've made a raft of new friends, joined groups and leagues, competed in a few streamed events, taken a few top times on the time trial boards, got back into making a few YT vids now and again, and invested over 1500 hours playing, I've even upgraded my wheel and pedals.
My advice? get the base game, load it up, if you've got a wheel? DL and install the custom FFB files from either Reiza Forums or Racedepartment (they really are an order of magnitude better than the Default and Default+ options),
Pick a car and track set up a practice session, set an alarm for 90 minutes and go for a thrash.
If by the end of 90 minutes you're grinning like a fool and BEGGING for more, fantastic, get the DLC's and have a blast.
If on the other hand, it leaves you with a sour taste in your mouth, at LEAST you tried it but you can still refund it within Steams 2 hour playtime limit.
I was grinning like an idiot after 10-20 minutes and I'm still loving having races like these...

I think Reiza did themselves no favours with the TSI only demo (but there was a deal with TSI regarding possible Esports later down the line (I might be wrong here). if they'd had say the GT4 cars or even the stock cars in the demo it'd make the game appear so much better.
IMHO THIS is what PC3 SHOULD have been as it makes a complete mockery of THAT particular dogs dinner...
AC feels like low quality budget game, no comparison.
I just bought AMS2 & Season pass bundle.
Currently downloading and hoping that this game is more similar to PC2 than AC.
Update: Just did 1st race.
Its just like PC2. Love it. :)
I loved Project Cars 1 and 2 and love AMS2 as well its very similar but in a lot of ways an improvement. And yes the cars like the Ginettas and GT cars are very similar. But there are so many new great circuits and cars too. Well worth a buy if you liked PCars2. As for your question the cars in the demo are pants pretty much the worst ones in the entire game. But this game is not quite as forgiving as PCars2 the tyres and car physics are more realistic and the tracks more accurate. Only downside really is no Clios, Ferrari, Lamborghinis or Audis and no Sugo or Fuji but otherwise its a great game.
Its fun to tweak.
I did one for GT3 class, to make the Ai far weaker than the 70% minimum slider.
I set all 13 Ai parameters to 0, that's for all 4 GT3 cars, all liveries.
42 liveries, or 42 Ai.
Of course, the Ai is way too weak with all setting 0.
I think even weaker than setting PC2 in game sliders to 0. lol
I just did 2 lap race and when I finished the 11 Ai drivers were all over 1 lap behind me. lol
If you can't beat them, you must be on foot. lol
For example, here is what 1 car, 1 livery, 1 Ai looks like in my GT3.xml:
<driver livery_name="McLaren 720S GT3 #04">
<name>McLaren 04</name>

This is the forum post that taught me how to do it for myself.
