its a fact that the sim racing genre is not that popular as others, but its not all major titles the same mate. some doing way better that others. numbers dont lie

Yeah I hear you but it's still slim pickings depending on what you race. The only major title I don't have is ACC. Each game has a max of 5-8 servers going. Not much for when you want to race in the moment.
FYI, this time (23:00 CET) ACC has at least 30 public lobbies with more than 15 drivers each.
AC has more than 50 (but since you have it you can see this)
probably iRacing have even more than AC(C), but im not a subscriber to know this for sure.
IMO the popularity of AMS2 is very low for the sim racing genre. especially in multiplayer.
maybe gamepad support is a factor. yet, PC2 with the same (i think) gamepad support has twice the 24hour peak players than AMS2. i not have any of this two installed anymore to see the lobbies numbers ATM but still an older game not supported for years has the double (if not more) popularity than AMS2.
i think their main focus is to deliver to their costumers the content they (pre)paid for (and thats fair!)
after this, they will maybe find the time (and maybe go deeper in the engine they didn't create) to give you the gamepad support this engine never had (and i wish it can have)
good luck with this. :D
When Reiza first announced AMS2 they asked for people to pre-invest.
The people that chose to do so became "Backers". They signed NDA agreements and for their troubles they were given access to the Beta test servers.
Part of the reason player numbers drop around the end of the month is because the backers have switched to playing on the beta servers, so we see a significant drop in player numbers when looking at either Steam Charts or Steam DB.
Whilst I'm just guessing here, the last 2 weeks there's been a significant drop in players, 2 weeks ago it was well over 500 players (as high as 800+) more often than not, it's now only managing just over 400 players at peak times.
Again this is just a guess but I suspect we're due another update and the last 2 weeks has been the Backers testing the coming update to check it for bugs BEFORE it goes public.
This is why most updates are bug free (more often than not), yes bugs DO still get through this process sometimes but are USUALLY minor issues which can be fixed pretty rapidly. From memory Reizas "personal best" hotfix for such an escapee is a mere 14 hours from initial reports.
If you take a look at SteamDB long term charts you can actually see this drop in player numbers over the games history, almost every month there's a dip in players followed by a surge.
Whilst I have no knowledge of anyone who's part of the backers group this pattern has been observed before every significant update so I really do suspect there's a significant update on the horizon.
AMS2 has never had MASSIVE player numbers but over time it's one of the few racing games where there IS an upward trend in player numbers.
Part of AMS2's biggest problem is it's on the Madness Engine, players who were disappointed by SMS efforts with PC2 and the irascible PC3 automatically assume AMS2 will be the same an avoid it as a result.
People, quite understandably, therefore assume that if SMS who MADE the Madness Engine can't get it right then no one can so the games a no go before they even try it.
What they don't realise is that the Madness Engine has some of the most in depth physics adjustments to be found in racing games, SMS just never bothered to fully utilise these, adopting a "That'll do" attitude.
Reiza on the other hand are all ex modders with a passion for tinkering, going so far as changing tyre tread layouts or the viscosity of the oil in the car differentials.
These are tiny changes right enough but they can and DO have significant effects on the gameplay.
SMS couldn't be bothered or refused to fund such in depth attention to detail because they're run by the "Suits" and investors who probably never even play games.
Renato and co are all from a modding background and fully understand OUR passion and our search for the best of the best.
The net result of these attitudes shows in player reviews on Steam, AMS2 is hovering just below 90%+ whilst PC2 sits at 80%+ and the crapcade PC3 has a mere 53%+.
as for other sims?
AC 91%+
ACC 90%+
RF2 81%+
Raceroom 72%+
So Reiza must be getting something right or players wouldn't be placing it in the top 3 racing games out there..
As for controller support? People forget these games are SIMULATORS not arcade titles like Forza where the levels of "hand holding" assists are beyond belief, why is this the case? Because the target audience before they made the jump to PC has been console users with controllers, yes they do cater to wheel owners and do a pretty decent job of it as well. Having said that look at FH5 right now, STILL no proper support for the CSL DD, and little sign it's even on the Horizon (pun intended).
AMS 2 got complete support over a month ago, at a guess we'll see CSL DD PRO support sooner rather than later, whilst FH5 languishes with mediocre support via CSW compatibility mode, trust me on this FH5 felt better on my T300 than it does right now on my CSL DD, I haven't played it since I got the CSL end of December other than to test it. It won't get played again until they DO add full support..
At a guess we MIGHT see a new update in the nest 2-7 days possibly Racin USA pt2 plus CSL DD PRO support.
Part of the reason for Reiza's silence is Renato got married recently and went on honeymoon, plus the several vitriolic individuals that choose to CRUCIFY Reiza for any delay, for not producing dev updates etc.
Reiza in response (quite rightly imo) have subsequetly said "OK then we'll say NOTHING from here on out, you'll know when it arrives and is READY for full deployment and not before, if you don't like that go play something else.."
Thanks to this "GIMME GIMME GIMME NOW NOW NOW!" brigade. NO one outside the backers and beta testers has ANY idea what's coming and WHEN it's coming.
No timeline, no dev updates, no schedule whatsoever because a few idiots didn't understand this game is in constant flux and unlike the BIG devs has full and complete support because this game is their entire focus, the dev team hasn't got the next project to work on.
Codemasters and others like them launch a title and the majority of the team moves on to the next title leaving a tiny team for bugfixes.
E.G. Codies left just 2 devs working on bugfixes for Grid Autosport which is why it took MONTHS for significant fixes to appear or they just abandoned ALL support, GRID 2019 was exactly the same.
This is why a BAFTA winning developer has fallen so far that desperately buying up other devs whilst not addressing the fundamental flaw in their approach has lead to them selling out to EA, and what was EA's first actions?? Dumping Codies CEO closely followed by Ian Bell CEO of SMS who PROMISED us "PC3 will be all the sim you'll want" and when this was shown to be utter garbage started shouting "PC4 will be the best sim EVER!".. Despite promising that since Project CARS (FWIW CARS stands for Community Assisted Racing Simulator yet the community has had NO input since PC1).
am i right or wrong if i assume that your answer to OP is that AMS2 multiplayer is well enough populated the first two weeks of each month?
