My rig is an i9-9900k clocked at 5.0Ghz , Asus Strix 2080ti, 32gb 3600 mhz ram Pimax 8KX and I've been all through all the possible combinations I can think of with several unclaimable hours that should have resulted in game play hours. BUT, I did discover one thing just three days ago and I've been at this since the game released in EA, so I've been through it all only to have to go through it all again because of a game or driver update etc . . . What I learned in my case at least, is that if you just set Pitool render quality to 0.5, basically it's lowest setting, from the default 1.0 and FOV set to small (120 degrees), as mentioned by REPresenh, then you can pretty much max out all your in game video settings, w/e MSAA or Post AA and shadows, set to 4x and low, respectfully with my current configuration, and use Steam VR super sampling, in abundance (currently I'm running 240%) and have a nearly crystal clear and beautiful screen holding a solid 75 fps. Not only that. IMO Pitool 2.0 rendering is just to thick and muddy looking in this game and I feel that cutting it back and bringing the Steam VR setting as high as you can get it gives an overall better performance and image quality. I also agree with setting the game file "graphicsconfigopenvrdx11" mentioned above with sharpness set to 3.0 as mentioned but also set clamping to 1.0. After all this, the important thing to remember is, depending on your track and car combo, these results most probably will vary. So Start adjusting with your favorite combo and go from there.
I would be interested in hearing others thoughts and findings from other Pimax users or any VR user and their respectful configuration and results.
To keep it simple just list your:
Current rig configuration
Pitool Setting
Steam VR setting
MSAA or POST AA
Shadows
As these appear to be the performance heavy hitters in this game.
DISCLAIMER: This is not a recommended settings post but more-so I'm agreeing with Represenh on How difficult this game is to setup and dial in, in VR. This game (AMS2) and basically all madness engine games I've tried, PC Cars 2 as well, Does not like Pitool for some reason and forces you to use one or the other (Pitool or Steam VR) to it's max potential but not both at the same. I run these settings above only with the madness engine and the results I achieved are limited to my current setup. Basically, your mileage may vary.
Note: Pitool is in use with minimum of 1.0 or higher in every other game or sim that I play.
64bits of RAM
EVGA RTX3090 Ultra
Thanks for the tip ! I spend hours and hours adjusting, never satisfied, but never thought about changing the FOV. I guess because I bought the 8KX just because of its wide fov. But 120 works fine and far better results indeed. I noticed that for example 70 fps in 90 hz mode is not at all the same as 70 fps in 75 hz mode. Ok, in theory it is, but not in practice, at least not in my case (3090 RTX, Ryzen 5900X, 32 GB mem). So going to 120 fov and 75 hz gives even more performance. I am spoiled because of my 4K oled screen, so I never was satisfied with VR. Still not possible to reach this visual level in VR with our current technology I think, but yeah the immersion compensates so I am happy with the pimax.
Currently I am on:
FOV 120
Refreshrate 75
Pitool Setting 2.0
Steam VR setting 30 % (can lower to 20)
In game:
MSAA high, Anisotropic: 16x, reflection high, environment map low, car detail Ultra, track Detail full, pit crew all, shadow detail off enhanced mirror no, motion Blur off, rendering frame 4, detailed grass low, particles level and density high
Yeah I never thought about changing the FOV from 150 either. But after spending hours try to get the best visual without sacrificing too much, it's just not possible with 150 FOV without sacrificing. Change to FOV 120 will bump up everything to another notch in visual fidelity. Now, I never try 75hz or 60hz...so if what you said it true, I might give it a try and see how it go.
I noticed you have shadow "off"? Why? Shadows is pretty important to me in VR....it gives you a sense of depth and perception of the object you're looking at. When I turned it off, I didn't like it. Shadow definitely take a big hit in performance along with environment map and grasses.
Yes try 75 and report your findings ! Shadows I have off since they are flickering a bit, especially in the distance, which reminds me all the time I am looking at an electronic screen. I put it off long time ago and never missed it. Also because of the huge impact shadows have on performance of course. Maybe are going to play with it again...
At 75Hz, it appears to be the same or worst to me. In rain, it dropped the frame rate to 60fps which is unplayable. I think I rather leave it at 90hz since I do not see a performance gain. To be fair, at 90Hz....rain will drop the frame rate to probably 70-75fps. It runs find on sunny and light rain. Until developers spend time optimized some of the tracks like Monza (no chicane), the game will suffer.
Hm ok, I now got it (75hz) at 20 % steam ss, shadows medium and I can even drive in thunderstorm, not very good but the best experience I have had with the pimax so far in this weather. Also close as many applications as you can, also browsers.
Oh no don't get me wrong, I can drive in rain and thunderstorm as well and it's definitely playable (I shouldn't say "unplayable"). If you look to the side as you drive, you can definitely see things a bit stuttering. So I prefer a smooth frame throughout. There's definitely a limit unless I test and turn the resolution down and see how much I can sacrifice. Nobody can drive in rain and thunderstorm in sharp crisp detail graphics unless they have RTX3090 and sacrifice a lot. IMO, I think the only way to resolve this is if the developers optimized the tracks or upgrade the graphics to RTX4090 in the future. OR developers make the game compatible with eye tracking for future headsets such as Pimax 8K12.
According to the pimax forum the Pitool setting (0,5-2) is prefered over the Steam VR setting (goes to 300 % i think). As you know there is a relation between them. Have you ever tested this in ams2 and if so which one is the prefered setting to max out in your opinion?
I did play with the pitool settings. You're asking question I already commented. See above.
So the only things I switch off is shadow and grass (which are big hit on performance). Too bad, these must be done to maintain the high level detailed graphics.
Where can one find the Steam Application multiplier rendering option, taking into account there is no controller (to work with in Steam application) ?
