Whats the purpose of a cargo terminus?

Connected at the end instead of middle mainly I guess.

Only advantage to i find to a terminus, apart from aeethetics is it is a bit thinner with the building on the end rather than the side.

In most cases i just use a through station as it is generally easier to line up and having the building on the side automatically leaves space for some overflow cargo buildings even if space is tight.

I use them when it is against the map edge or on an island. When you know nothing else will be coming through it. It is a point to point station as far as I am concerned, for bringing far flung resources in. Also, sometimes it fits nicely in tight spots, like amongst crop fields.

Yeah it's just for convenience so you can build that layout quickly instead of doing it manually.

You can modify stations manually with any layout you want (terminus, through, combination...).

About that. I am currently playing as I type this. I had a train cargo station that was 160 meters long. I had a train that was 172 meters long. Using configure for the station I added platforms to extend the station length.

It does not register, the train still has a loading speed penalty. If you manually change them does the game not recognize the new length?

Did you add the track module as well? Each section of a terminal needs both a platform module and a track module. It can't use the regular tracks you place on the map. So the 160-m long terminals needs 4 platform modules and 4 track modules.

The station was single tracked. I added a platform at the end of the existing platform along the track. Perhaps that was incorrect.

I eventually bulldozed the station and built a 240 meter, 4 track to replace it.

It is a predefined quick to build template. Suitable to point to point lines. May be easier to build than a through station in some places, especially town centers with not a lot of space.

Like a through station, it can be freely edited to further suit your needs, including conversion to a through station at a later stage if needed.

Right, so that's what I mean, platforms next to existing regular tracks ("non-station tracks") do nothing. Platforms need "station tracks" beside them for the full length of the platform.

So when you're modifying a station, every time you add a platform module to lengthen the station, you also have to add a track module beside it. If existing regular tracks are in the way, you need to bulldoze those first.
