Trains Going Long Way on a circle route
A bit ago I setup a train route to flow Point A, to point B, to Point C, to Point D then back to A... it's a circle. It only had one train so not being blocked.

I also had another connected circle route, different stations except one, but possible for trains to go on either circle, that I hadn't even put any lines or trains on.

Sometimes the train would follow the correct flow, but most often it'd circle round the longest path... shortest path say being 50 miles and longest 500 miles.

I destroyed a part of the railroad that would allow that and it flows fine now, but what would cause that or fix that?

Ever since they added the alternate platform feature there is an issue where trains will sometimes look for an alternative path when any changes or construction has taken place along their planned path. It is recommended to always pause the game before you make any changes, whether it be modifying a station or adding a signal or whatever, in order to minimise this behaviour. Or just don't have any alternate paths for them to take in which case they will never take an alternate path.

As noted above, this can occur when you build or change things with the game's simulation on play.

Do not build or change things with the simulation game on play. This will pretty much ensure this will not happen.

If you do not mind, you can also fully segregate tracks - each line having each set of tracks, with no access to other lines.

Yea I had to do that with another line. It kept merging into the wrong track and would get stuck and block other trains. I don't know why it would even merge as it wouldn't even be able to complete its route. Probably cause the other thing, where I didn't pause while building the tracks.

Yea, I already got in the habit of only building with the game paused long time ago.

Considering I like very complex and interconnected networks, segregated lines are really not my cup of tea. But the option to do so is there if building with the simulation active is important.

I found using way points to force the trains to go the right way helps. I've even had a ship go off in the wrong direction.
