Also depending on what ever mod you added may not be optimized for your computer, most mods affect your video memory/ram, if your using a 8GB ram processor, check the name of your computer, for example it might be a Dell insperon 5000 model, meaning you wanna check sites like dell to get the parts or know the limits of upgrades you need for better game-play. Also what type of graphic card you maybe using can cause lag an or crashing.
few current but limited fixes:
lower settings to the lowest possible limit, most-likely the grass, trees, and shadows are slowing your game, the size of map your playing on the bigger the map the slower your game will be unless its empty, if you are a megalo map lover with a low 8GB processor then it is bound to crash often.
If you are in the middle of building but don't have the game on pause then most-likely your world is upgrading and the most-likely cause is a corrupted road or track, to fix this just read my recent fix to that issue -
https://steamcommunity.com/app/1066780/discussions/0/3167694551632212793/
other fixes to crashes such as memory is to fix the (Video virtual memory) to allow more use from your Ram card, you fix this in your system operation settings if you are on windows, i don't know how to do the same if you are using a mac computer, You can google it for info.
Hope this helps

Should give you an idea if you have an issue with a mod or something
My spec is a
Ryzen 3700
RX 580 8Gb
32Gb RAM
1Tb SSD
(so my Games Drive has its own SSD)
As I mentioned, I run backups for my save files and I only load new mods 5 at a time, in case I need to roll back. I have games that were working fine a few days ago that are now crashing. I have also switched from Vulkan to Open GL
you also mention you have games working fine a few days ago that are now crashing, you mean as in other games are crashing besides TF2 and is causing the same issue?
if that's the case this sounds like a steam issue or a virtual memory issue, won't know till we get the crash report from TF2. located in
C:\Program Files
or
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\{steamID#}\1066780\local\crash_dump\stdout
That didn't fix the issue till I realized I needed to fix the virtual memory settings manually.
Note: you need a minimum of 16gb of ram to do this.
Watch this video to get started: https://youtu.be/gx6ffIMSy28
Note this will not work on anything less than 16gb of ram...
Set your minimum memory to 8000 and your max memory to at least 15500. If you have more ram then set it close to allow your game to function. This should fix the issue.
This is frustrating, it appears to be getting worse, ie, if I roll back to earlier (Working) saved games, they are also corrupt.
I now get a Fatal Error that quits back to Windows.
Dump File says:
Error message: Assertion `count == 1' failed.

You'll have to start a new map sadly.
Try that see if the new map crashes too without mods installed.
I really appreciate your explanation.
Rod :-(
Look at the list of mods you used on the map that's crashing your game, if I'm not mistaken you can still load your map but it crashes when you do any activity on the map, so it's likely that the crash could be caused by anything moving, like trains crossing a bugged track, you are going to activate those same mods on the new map to test if it crashes an we'll narrow it down till you find the guilty mod.
also make sure you turn off auto saves in options before you start, once you on the new map try doing some of the things you think was causing your crashes such as placing items or roads, if it doesn't crash, try using the terrain tool see if it crashes then, if not then it maybe a road or track on your old map that may need to be deleted that might also be causing the crash, so after testing on the new map, go back to your old map and make sure you pause the game.
It's best to pause the game when doing this, since having buildings and AI do things such as upgrading, or having your routes be use on a bugged track or road can also cause crashing so pause the game on your old map till you identify the problem.
I'm trying to save your map so it's best to look around your old map with the bulldozer and hover over roads, tracks and buildings, don't delete them. You're looking for a notification that said (you can't build here) in red. if you find that on your old map then we found the source of your problem.
in the older game TF1 the same cod would say
SimPersonSystem::NoteSimEntityAtVehicleChanged
So this has something do with a building such as bus stops on corrupted roads so look around your old map see if you get the (construction not possible) notification and let me know.
Transport Fever error site listing

Thank you for all that information.
The crash dump is like a bomb that went off, it's total carnage. I've tried different map templates and then everything crashes. In fact, sometimes I can't even run the file, everything freezes before it crashes.
I can have the game paused and it will still crash
Sometimes I get a warning on my desktop that there has been an internal error.
Most of the crash log is missing textures. Some say "Wagon" but which wagon. some mention roads, but which?
So thanks for your help, but it's just overwhelming my patience.
Am I able to post the dump file here or should I send the dump file to tech support?
Anyway, thank you for sharing your knowledge. :-)
Rod
I've gone back to an early map, I've pulled out about 50 mods. The game seems to be ok then suddenly it freezes up.
When I check the dump file it's referencing mods I don't use and have never used (for example, I only use 2 aircraft types, not the half dozen I could select from different mods)
If I run the game again, when I go to the mods, the mods I have already removed are back in the enabled list.
I thought when I opened a game and removed mods and saved it before it crashes, those mods should be delisted.
As I said it seems to be a corrupted system, there are just far too many errors to be one or two mods.
But I think my patience is done, I might just park the game for a while.
Again, thanks to those who provided advice.
Rod :-)
But like you said you need to take a break because this can get frustrating, best to send that crash report to the TF2 devs.
