You can also use some of the mods that add new locomotives to the game. Some of them have reversed versions available.

I'm using this one now actually! It's just that I don't think if there's a way to actually place two locomotives on a train, one facing left and one right, with this mod. But this mod is why I'd like to be able to. Not necessarily for the era I'm in now, but once I start hitting diesel...
This may well do it!
That's actually a good point, I never thought of that... If this other mod doesn't work out (and for modded engines), this may be the way.
To get rear-facing locos at the end of the train needs a mod that provides rear-facing loco models. (The way TpF2 code works is that the front-facing and rear-facing loco models are technically unique, they are not simply the same model just facing in the other direction.) So a mod has to actually create a new model of the loco that faces rearward.
Some mods have created these for the vanilla locos (search workshop for "reverse" or something like that). And mods that provide non-vanilla loco types often include reversed models. Depending on which you use, the versions are either listed as variants of the primary model in the buy menu, or they show up as separate buy items. Either way, just add it to the train. If there is already a loco at the front, the next one will usually go at the end. If not, just click the little move arrow on it while holding Shift to make it go to the end of the train.
As along as the mods have reverse enabled, then the train will drive "brackwards" instead of auto-flipping at stations. In the buy menu the train name will show a double-arrow above the front loco if reverse is enabled <--> . Also in the loco description it will say Drive Backward = yes.
Making trains without a loco at the rear end (such as steam trains) drive in reverse instead of auto-flipping is a different case that requires other special mods, which have invisible dummy wagons for the back of the train to simulate a loco with reverse enabled.
