How does one "ride along" as a passenger?
Sorry if I seem dense asking this as there are previous discussions on this... I can go to camera mode and zoom around, but it's rather clumsy trying to get inside. Is there any simple camera selection that just simply plops me in one of the seats?

Hi, in the vehicle window click the little cam icon to go into ride-along mode. Then use PgUp / PgDn to cycle through different views.

The available views vary depending on the vehicle / mod. You can also add this mod to get more view positions:

OK, thanks. Doesn't work exactly as hoped, as there's an issue with the graphics clipping with your "head" still being partially outside, and still not being completely "inside". But better than trying to maneuver the camera around.

It depends on the models. For some locos and carriages, it works splendidly. For others, not so much. Some models I've downloaded as mods are outright broken. It all depends on whether the creator remembered to check if his model works with the view camera.

If you don't get a lovely view - try riding on a different train (with different passenger carriages).

Haha this is so true! I have one where the "driver camera" is mistakenly attached to one of the loco's moving parts (a wheel I think) and it's like being inside a blender! 😂

Just think of it as the rat's eye view.

A rat was sitting on the rail. Along comes the train and smoosh. Now the rat is part of the wheel. :)

Dave,

You can freely move about inside your train/loco or bus/tram or truck with the 4 arrow keys and the W/A/S/D/Z/X keys. So if f.i. you find yourself sitting on top of a non default locomotive just use these keys to position yourself in the cab or at the front of the loc or be a bird and soar along the track a bit above your train.

IMHO it's one of the beautiful features of TPF2 that you won't find in any other townbuilding/ transport themed game. (try this: follow your train as it rides along a road (you know that it's cheaper to build your traintrack alongside a road, right ?..) click a car that drives in the same direction and quite a bit in front of your train and hop inside it (say hello to the driver), wait a sec to see your train wizz by from inside the car. Works best with steam loc driven trains of course ;-)
