Can someone explain why I as a veteran TTD/OPENTTD player just can't get hooked to this game?
I really REALLY want to like and enjoy this game but there is just something that I can't figure out why it just doesn't get me hooked even though I absolutely love this genre.

Well, personal preferences vary.

Dynamic pathing? Local authority? Etc.

As for me, and others as well, oTTD is a great game, but is heavily limited by its 2D isometrical gameplay with very little elevation control, plus limited agent system on cargo dist.

Can't please everyone.

You might get want to check out mods, if you did not yet.

You need to put in the hours in freeplay, get a network going and that will suck you in. The campaign for the most part is a glorified point and click tutorial.

Yeah I noticed that very fast. I absolutely dislike campaign mode in games like these. Only really did the first campaign mission to understand how the game work.
After that I played the sandbox mode.
But for some reason I just can't really get sucked in but I keep trying every few months since I instantly bought this when it released.

I rarely mod games but I will take a look. I usually prefer to enjoy a game how it is made by the developers of the game itself.

It might help to watch someone play the game to get inspired. It can be a bit bland in the early game when you haven't really developed much of a network yet.

As a veteran OpenTTD player I really like this game. :-)

As Vimpster suggested, watch a few youtubes to gain some inspiration. Master Hellish and Construction Gamer are two who's channels I enjoy.

Cheers,
Chris.

Hmmm I never really looked at other people play games. But this might help.

Yeah might do that

It is definitely worth watching some guides, there is a lot of nuance of things you can do that aren't obvious.

I also don't use mods much, but I am a fan of Natural City Growth.

As others have said, there's plenty of inspiration to be had watching YouTube gamers. If you want to see some really crazy construction, watch Colonel Failure. As a former OpenTTD veteran, this is what got me drawn into TF2.

It depends on why you play Transportation games. If you play with the idea of building an empire that controls all of the land then this game is for you. If you like to build virtual model railways, this game is also for you.

If you check out my profile I have some videos that may be motivators for the latter if that is your game play style.

As someone who played TT before the Deluxe edition came out my guesses are these.

No competing AI companies.
No Character creation.
No Fiery accidents.
No subsequent newspaper report for said accidents.
Terrible graphs for operating profits, running costs (etc) to compare performance with your non existing rival companies.
No stock prices or purchasing of shares in other companies.
Ugly UI.

TT,/ TTD was ahead of its time. As a game it was the complete experience.
Great community and that's why we got OpenTTD.

But it is hard to argue that TF2 doesn't look way better.
You play TT for the gameplay.
You play TF2 for the aesthetics/ visuals, and you want to enjoy following your vehicles around looking at scenery. But there is no real challenge beyond paying down your loan or getting high speed trains to reach top speed, so it gets boring. Its just a really pretty model railroad builder with some economy sprinkled in.

I've wanted AI competition since Train Fever which came before the first TF, but I can understand that this would be way too hard for Urban Games Developers to accomplish.
That might not even be what they intended for their game in the first place.

It might just be something us TT veterans had come to expect.

Plus as we get older we naturally feel more shame in wasting time on silly games as if we were irresponsible children. I would personally recommend reading the Holy Qur'an. It really puts things into perspective.
May Allah's peace and blessings be upon you.

Like others have said, I guess it depends on why you play/ what you get out of games like this. When I start a new map, I like to have some goal in mind and a bit of RP/lore in my head about what's happening, so I don't just do the same thing over and over. Like maybe I choose one of the smallest towns on the map that happens to be near an important primary resource and my goal is to grow that town to be a major hub. Playing with the time progression speed and/or altering the start year can change the way you play a lot too.

Because OpenTTD is honestly just better, in every way.

TF2 has its niche fun, and I enjoy it, but I'd take OpenTTD any day.

TF2 is like Cities Skylines...it's shallow in actually having any mechanics, it's more like just a transportation painter.

OpenTTD has actual mechanics, competitors, growing your city just felt more fun in OpenTTD.

The Tycoon features are all half-implemented. I loved in Railroad Tycoon when a new invention would come out in the paper, and then you'd rush to adapt your transport networks to take advantage of it. Then the first one would pull into the station in a fun animation.

I don't miss the viciousness of actually being a tycoon in those games (I have enough viciousness in real life thanks) but those small rewards for progress make a game much more enjoyable than you'd expect. The brain is a small morsel reward center. Give the morsels.
