Well, you can also just sell the old locomotive and buy a new one. But that's not 100% what I wanted to do here. I wanted to use the old locomotive for... Well, I'll just explain because it might be a head-scratcher without context.
I made a small, early train for a long leg of my machinery supply chain. Gave it five flatbed cars because it really couldn't have handled much more weight, given how hilly my map is. It was gonna be handling logs and wood exclusively.
Once I was able to upgrade to a stronger engine, I decided I wanted to create a new, shorter line to transport ore and coal to the steel mill, rather than keep having carts do it. I wanted to switch the old engine to gondola duty, and the new engine, I thought I'd give the stake cars to (plus a few more) for the longer leg of the journey.
In short, I wanted to keep my old engine and give it a new role that required different cars, but the only way I could find to do that was to sell all the stake cars and rebuy them from the ground up for the new engine.
There is no doubt that you might need to keep older engines etc for other purposes, but it isn't really viable, unless you've just setup a passenger line and need it to grow before you put something on it that's worthwhile.
