Arguably the maintenance cost should go up for obsolete vehicles since parts won't be available - that is my only complaint - it is a bit unrealistic.
1) I find it jarring to see the "magic" in-place upgrade when the vehicle en route transmogrifies to the replacement vehicle. I can suspend disbelief that when it did so at the next station in TpF1 we just didn't see the maintenance crew come in and swap it out, but to see it magically change while travelling is odd. But that's a minor complaint overall.
2) I found the system of queuing a replacement train design in the Replacement Vehicle setting for the line, and then being able to replace individual trains (more so than other vehicle types) with the new configuration on demand to work very well for me. I usually start a line with a small locomotive and a couple cars to get things moving, and then as production builds I gradually upgrade the vehicle capacity. I really liked the old system for this.
There really shouldn't be any discussion of "this way is better than that way", however. Just make the old mechanism also available and users can use whichever system works best for them in the given situation.
But like SoftwareSimian i am missing the possebility to queue an upgrade when i have found the setup that works for a line even if i dont have money for the moment but they will be when i have.
It's a mental thing.
You'll get over it.
(People said they didn't like auto-replacement at first, too).
Then the purists can keep their game as shipped and anyone else could obtain the mod as desired.
Keep both sides from having their panties in a knot!
Why would you need an Automoatic Replacement???
When a new vehicle is coming out then you have to set the Automoatic Replacement anyway. In TF2 you can select any of your trains and replace them with the new one so there is the same mechanic!
I dont get it that so many want that "feature" back!
