1920 is a good start date for me. You have some road vehicles to set up bus lines between your cities and the trains are decent. You even have planes quite soon as well.

Always 1850. 'Cheep' RR track is the best way to get a jump start on having massive networks.

I play this game more as a city builder and rail/network modeler, and I am not too keen on the idea of developing a company across time.

My favorite period in railroading is late XIXth century and early XX. So I usually start about 1880 and play until 1930, then _maybe_ I just have fun with the overpowered vehicles available them.
