If you open up the game and go to the settings from the main menu and select the Advanced tab, there should be a button at the bottom of that section that is labeled "open userdata". Click on that and in the new window that opens select and open the settings file. In that file, on line 21 it says "experimentalmapsize = false,". Change the false to true and save the file. This will unlock 2 larger size maps called "huge" and "megalomaniac" as well as one smaller size map called "tiny". I think it also unlocks map ratios above 1:3.

You may need to restart the game for the change to take affect.

Ty, would that work to a saved game?

No, only for new maps.

You cannot change the map size when loading a savegame.

Because game performance is appaling with large cities and large maps.

I love your ambition, but the game won't like trying to support it.

Extra Large Map - Yes it is possible now. No need to change from false to true in the base config file. The line "experimentalmapsize = false," is not there. To play a EXTRA LARGE Map , like my usual EXTRA MEGA 1:5 map, you select from the list when you start a new game/map. The left side you adjust the map parameter like water, mountains and random seed. The right side at the top you select the size , the ratio, the number of city and the number of industries. My setting is : EXTRA MEGA SIZE, 1:5 ratio, Lowest Cities, Lowest Industires, Select Desert, Mountains and NO water, and see if I like the overview of the map, if yes, select yes, if I dont like it, I select a new seed, until I like the overview and the cities locations and I select next.

I like to keep to a low cities count.

It was never in the config file. It was always in the settings file and it still is.

@Vimpster

I will check it out. When I did change the line to true, it was in the file baseconfig, now it is not there. Maybe they move some other location. When the game updated ( two updated ago ) , that line was not there in the baseconfig. , before it was there. The only thing is there in the baseconfig is you can change the sandbox mode to true, the achievement with mod to true and the industries button to true, but not the experimental map size line ... in my base config file, unless it is move somewhere..

As I said, it is in the "Settings" file. Not the config file.

@Vimpster

I found the file. First. I did not know you can access the setting directory and those files from the game. So it simply goes straight to : Steam/userdata/useridnumber/idgamenumber/local and the file setting.lua. Even you can check the "crash dump" sub-directory for any error dump file.

So a short cut.

Sorry that I was a bit confuse. So the game move from base.lua to setting.lua. That will explain.

I guess you still a few things to lean about the game even after over 1000 hours of play.

Another reason experimental maps are (were?) not enabled by default: The smallest map size sometimes interacts Very strangely with the island (asian) maps. It's possible to adjust the settings such that there's not actually enough land for all the industries and cities to fit on so they end up overlapping and sticking into the ocean and other such silliness.

whenever I try it the code says

experimentalMapSizes = false,

I change the false to true but it swaps back i know I saved it im using notepad is that ok?

Did you make the change while the game was open? The game saves the settings file when it closes. So if you change the file while the game is open. The game changes it back to the original values when it closes.

Notepad is perfectly acceptable.

As noted, do the change with the game not running.
