Chapter 1, Mission 5, a compass might help
First find a shaman to the southeast, easy enough since its a big yellow question mark.
Next dig up some gemstones again to the south, but this time to the southwest. I assumed, wrongly as it turned out, that south west was at the same kind off area but to the other side of the lake, it's a 3:1 map for those that dont know, but no instead of 3:1 map, its a 1:3 map, so that south and northis the entire long lenghts of the map. This would be fine if i had to find an enormous yellow question mark, but no its a small and very non visible,at least its non visible from the east part of the map, red circle. If you tell players to go to north, south, east or west, give clue where those are, and use the same indicators for mission accepters, sometimes its question marks, sometimes they are red circles, sometimes grey frigging houses, sometimes purple circles, CONSISTENCY WOULD BE AWESOME, rant over kthxbye

For this task, the first thing I did was look up a real-world map of Lake Baikal. By comparing the locations of the towns and the shape of the lake, it became clear that the game map was oriented "upside down" - South was up and North was down.

But yes, a compass is a must if you are going to tell people to look in the North.

Yep it's like this game intentionally tries to frustrate and thwart you. Ruins what is otherwise a fun game.
