I agree. Train whistles/horns/bells belong to real life. But this is a game, and I don't want to have my ears blown all the time without having a choice. I have stopped playing Railway Empire for this very reason. In that game the trains blow the horn every time they stop and every time they start. It is noise hell for me. and you can't turn it off. But IF you could turn it on or off in the settings, then I would have no problem with it.
Something need to be sacrificed for late game performance. Besides do ya need a 40 train station blowing their horns every time?
Depends on regulations in individual countries.
In Ireland, even today, trains blow their horns on leaving stations.
In Germany and Switzerland, on the other hand, horn / whistle is usually only used as a warning in dangerous situations or when a signal "Pfeiftafel" requires it.
IMO, the best solution would be to have a "Pfeiftafel" (AFAIR there was one as a mod in TF1) in-game.
Transport Fever is not a trainsim like Train Simulator where you are actually in command of a train. In Transport Fever we're not. When we ride along we ride along as a passenger, not a traindriver. Passengers don't pull the whistle cord or hit the horn button. That's a rule... ;-)
Btw, we have not forgotten already that in TpF1 most loco's/trains DID blow their horns when leaving the station, did we ?.... Some of the whistles/horns on loco/train mods were very nice indeed ! I remember a great steam whistle, two very short blows. Beauttiful soothing sound that i miss very much in TpF2.
Personally i am all for train whistles/horns but with an option to turn it off. Here in Holland, when two trains meet eachother they'll give a short toot as a greating (atleast they used to..), wouldn't mind that happening in TpF2 too.
What i'd love to see added when it comes to trains and sound is the typical train conductor's whistle just before the train starts to move.
