I'm assuming I also can't change it from holding the mouse button and dragging out to just using two simple point to point clicks?
1- Use the height buttons to raise/lower the end of the track.
2- Use the M & N keys to raise/lower the middle of the track section.
3- Change the track (or road) to another type.
Why would you think that? Very few (I know of only the one) have this "feature".
Think before you click on that big green check mark. The Good News is, if you make a mistake, you can bulldoze the newly laid section and get a full refund (new for TF2).
Well it's a transport focused game and a very useful feature if you're going to create long sections of track in one go. Especially considering the other possible amendments as you've listed above I didn't think it was unreasonable that other amendments might be possible.
I'm not sure any of this falls under point-to-point clicking though; you have to hold the mouse and drag the track out. Clicking a start and end point without holding would be a more comfortable way to build. This also works nicely with adjusting tracks and having a tick box to finalise the layout. I was looking for an option to toggle holding vs clicking but doesn't seem like there is one.
I thought the idea of the check mark was so you wouldn't need a full refund as you're effectively using a visual planning stage before confirming a build?
It's still nice to get a refund, though you definitely don't get a full refund for buildings. It's easier to place track and then a depot than place the depot and try to join it to the track for example.
Mistakes will always happen, but it's a great system for minimising track layout mistakes.
Old thread, but worth more conversation:
Was searching around to see if anyone knew if there may be plans to allow route adjustments similar to Railway Empire in the future. While TF2 is superior in many ways, the track and road laying mechanics feel old and a bit clunky since all you can adjust is the endpoint and entire length height. Getting the right curves in the right areas without going piece by piece can be challenging. Hoping for a future update or re-imagining for a TF3.
Developers have said nothing about this, so as far as I know no plans about this.
Rather than this specific pre-planning feature, I rather have something akin the Move It mod from Cities Skylines instead.
Besides the lack of this pre-building feature, RE/RE2 building tools are much more restrictive than TpF 2, would be nice if we could get it, but it is significantly less needed due to the much more flexible nature of TpF 2's building tools.
Lay tracks using (at least) these two mods

and then later upgrade the "ballast beds" to real tracks.
As I also use

and tons more I even need to produce railroad tracks to be able to lay them - on the already built "ballast beds".
