Why is there a limit on station length?

Just wondering out loud- WHY do you need longer stations? If it's to hold more cargo, you aren't moving enough cargo fast enough. Sitting cargo doesn't make you any money. Neither does passengers just standing around.

Just be sure to put the train station capacity from 1 to 20.

Nope. If you plant a 320m station then you can only add 2 more sections which equates to 400m!

I stand corrected (and so does ronelst85).
With a 320m station, you can "configure" it and add up to 3 more track and platform sections (I just tested it. However I was using the Sandbox mod- maybe that made a difference).

Have you tried adding to the other end of the station? You're allowed lengths up to 520m by default.

That being said, you can have even longer trains stop at these "short" platforms with no noticeable downsides (in terms of load/unload times), as long as you ensure that that said trains can turn around or enter/leave after stopping.

Additionally, there also exists a mod that increases the modules available to you, but judging from the comments, it might be unstable:
