Passenger train station placement
I have a passenger inter city train link, with the station on the outskirts, and transporting passengers to the station via trams, but most people are using private transport. frequency is 92s. Would it be best to locate my train station in the centre of my residential area.

Because passengers go from residential to commercial or industrial , the best place to put the station is in the commercial or industrial area away from the residential as residential does not like emissions.

Click on a single citizen using his own car , details, and check from which house (not only town) he come from and to which house he targets and think about the reasons using his own car.
Finding solutions for single citizens often helps also finding a general solution.

I place mine like Autocoach said, always near the Industrial and/or Commercial areas. I also run a dedicated tram/bus line from the center of the Residential area to the train station, with those being the only two stops. That way most residents have a quick way to get to the train and use that to go to the other cities.

@ Gorby, why only two tram/bus stops ? Residents still have to walk to the tram/bus station from all over the town ? Does a 2 stop line like that remain profitable thru time ?..

Usually i have about 8 tram/bus stops thru a town to feed the trainstation, back and forth, and serving residential, commercial and industrial areas. Works quite well. When time progresses use of these lines does deteriorate though. Remarkable enough there's always a few stops that are packed with pax.

There is little doubt that it would be profitable. The real question is whether or not it is effective. I would expect very little of the town, particularly with larger towns, to use such a setup. But enough people in the very immediate area of the station would probably use it in order to make it profitable. In large cities you would need a lot more than 1 stop to cover all the residential buildings, and even if you only just covered the buildings you would be missing out on much of the town using the setup because of the walking distance.

A very effective local bus/tram network is not likely to be very profitable one. The player has to choose to focus on profit or good passenger service or compromise to do a mix of the two.

it also depends on which year you play, how strong(=fast cars) the private traffic is.

In my opinion the best way to start passenger service in a city is to:

1. Add streets until you have a complete square or rectangle surrounding the city. This is your bus loop. You should be able to cover the entire area inside the loop by placing bus stops along the loop. Make sure to complete intersections along the loop that lead into the city. This will improve the coverage of bus stop in some situations.

2. Place the railroad passenger station outside of the loop and run a street from the loop to the station. The station should be close enough to the loop so that a bus station on the loop links it with the station. I try to make the street leading to the station as long as possible. To allow for max expansion of the city and to reduce emissions.

3. Now create a bus line with stops along the loop described above. You can often start with a small number of stops. Then add a few later as the city fills in.

I said that wrong; I meant that those are the only two stops on that line, I have many more stops and lines throughout the city. But I try to make sure the residential lines stop at the tram station with the train station line on it. The 2-stop "express" line I mentioned before is usually always on the profitable side, though barely. I'd have to watch for excess capacity more often than I like so sometimes I don't.
