Steam version worth it over GOG?
I usually try to buy games on GOG if it's possible first, as I'm not a big fan of Steam for various reasons. But reading about the first game it seems there are some Workshop-exclusive mods out there.

So the question is, should I buy it on Steam for the workshop or I'm totally fine with GOG version (they cost the same in my region)?

I don't usually play with hundreds of mods though, I mainly use mods to fix some obvious flaws in the game, fill the gaps, that sort of things. I probably won't be downloading extra train sets for various regions and stuff like that. I'm not a "model railroad" kind of player, more interested in gameplay aspects.

Thanks in advance.

Depends I suppose if you own steam version of TpF.. I get a 25% discount for pre ordering.. on Gog you probably won't get that.

Well you pretty much answered your own question there bud, I mean if you really don't care about mods then GOG will be the better option if you like the feeling of "owning" your game, I doubt Steam will be going anywhere any time soon so I personally don't mind, I just like the idea of having my games in a neat little store, rather than having to go to x website to download this game, y website to download that one.

I am sure there would be 3rd party mods that can be installed on the GOG version.

Both versions will be supported with updates, just obviously with steam these updates will be done automatically, unless you are using the GOG Client (but then whats the point?)

Now although I have been discussing my reasons against a multiplayer mode in this game, if it were to come out however, my experience is GOG games sometimes don't support it without you going through the client.

I bought a copy of worms on GOG, just because it was cheap, and I wanted to try out this DRM Freeness, and went to play online, but the online mode would only work if I were to go through that GOG Galaxy (if it is still called that) So it seems it needs a DRM check for you to play online, so if this is something you want, just stick with steam.

This is a good question. Buy Steam, and one day when it dies you'll need outdated DRM emulators just to play your game. Buy on GoG and have no access to Steam Workshop.

Imo, I'd go for Steam. I can imagine by the time Steam dies, these games will be too dated to play anyway.

Some modders post mods on here and other places, but many great mods (imo) are Workshop only.

If you're stuck choosing, maybe check out TpF1 mods on Steam, find one you really would go for, and see if its available on the TpF website as well. If not. Steam might be your best choice.
If there is nothing you really want or need, then you can stay with GoG and enjoy vanilla +TpF site mods if need be.

Thanks for the great answers guys. I never played any of the previous games from this company, so I'll have to discounts. I'll have to think this through.

I will do both, a steam version for ease of use (especially for mods) and GOG version to support the devs and as safety copy in case steam goes belly up. I know I will spend 1000's of hours playing this game so it will still be a bargain.

Well, if Steam dies, you have no workshop either, so that's a draw. And about emulators, nothing to lose, if it is a single player only game to begin with. And I don't think that we have to worry about that anytime soon. Most likely not before the TF2 support has ended anyway.
Personally, I have TF1 on Steam, so it makes sense to get TF2 here too. I don't think, GOG would give me a discount in this case. The workshop also makes a difference. And it is actually rarely the case that I prefer a game on Steam.

Im quite lucky to have a 16TB home server with a Steam Cache going, so everything I own and sub to is hosted in my local network. Really handy when mods change or get removed.
But yeah very good point.

Never really liked the Steam emulator on GitHub. But I hear Steam have a plan. Tbh it will be years until it goes down, unless they don't drop their ~30% charge.

Its a shame we cant use workshop without owning the game on Steam. Valve make enough money hosting mods. Its also a shame Urban don't host all TpF mods on Steam for everyone to use in their game, that sites kinda dies since TF.

GoG's great for those who want to own the game, rather than semi own. I like GoG.
