Does jump distance matter?
Ok, a question that bothers me since tpf1. As you know, you can place stations further away from buildings. As long as industries are in the area of effect, goods will just jump over.

Is there ANY advantage in not using this distance? For rxample, if i place a truckstation right at the frontdoor of a farm, will - for example - the frequency at which new goods are send to the station, be higher compared to a truckstop further away? Or will a train unload faster, if the destination ist right beside the station instead if further away?

For public transport it does matter, because higher walking distances can result in a massive loss of attractivity. So i think, it has to have an effect for goods as well, but i feel it is difficult to test.

Without any specifical testing, It seems to me that it doesn't affect goods output, I have stations at different distances from industries but the outputs seem to be the same. But someone could have tested it with different results.

I doubt it , if you are in range you are in range.

Yea. The point us, that the color-overlay changes with an increasing distance. Closeby it is white, at maximum distance it is getting grey.

I really wondering if this is indicating some effects or if it is just a confusing ui-design.

I don't think it's confusing. Grey just means: "that's about it, a bit further and it's gone."

Asking the right question... But I don't think it has any effect at all, at least I didn't realized a difference.

Maybe he is right:

Too bad there is no official info about this.

My understanding is that the distance matters for passenger travel, but not for cargo travel. The distance that cargo "jumps" into the station does not appear to have any impact on anything (and the distance from the station to the ultimate recipients doesn't seem to impact anything, either, although recipients closer to the station may get prioritized).

For passengers, because they don't actually jump at all, the distance matters because it impacts their total calculated travel time, and thus their motivation to use public transportation in the first place.

Wouldn't you make more money if the station is closer to the farm and the goods are then transported further? Only by doing a test and seeing how much money you make with one truck, move the station and then see vs how much it costs in maintenance for the truck with the added distance.

I've personally never really bothered with this as I prefer to have my stations close to the farm/factory for realism look.

It's based on price per km, so you'd earn more when farther. Vehicle run time gives the cost, which is hardly different for a marginal distance difference.

Just tested. The money value is calculated based on distance from station to station, not source to destination. Maximizing jump distance results in lower transport fees. That's not to say there isn't a place for it, such as cheater stations across the street from each other to span close facilities.
