You can also run passengers on the roads between towns, but that usually needs *A LOT* of horses.

- Make youself a picture: Try to locate good stating positions.
-Do not overbuild: Empty Cars, trains etc. don't make money. Anything you build has maintenance costs.
-Start at zero: Money on the bank doesn't work. Spend it! If you can't spend it usefully, use it, to pay back loans.
-Use your infrastructure: Use the public roads. try to double use your track as much as possible. Don't doubletrack your network from the start. Just Use a couple of nwaiting lines.
-Try to avoid emptr drives. ERly vehicles have low profitablity marginds. An empty drive, can eat all you prefits.
-Be cheap: Avoid Bridges and tunnels. Cling youself to the terrain. Do not bulldoze anything, if possible. There is no point, in building an expensive speedy line, as long, as your trains only do 40 km/h, you can always rebuild your lines later, when you have a higher income.
As for industry. Look for the simple ones at first 2 chain or 3 and concentrate on supplying the bigger towns with their needs.
The PTPs (road) need very little input and turn profit within the decade. If it’s not pulling money right away don’t be to hasty. It may be supporting another line covering the shortfall and then some.
