Track speed limit
Would be nice to be able to select a stretch of railtrack, select "speed limit" from a drop down menu and set the speed limit just by typing in numbers. Secondly it would be nice to be able to set a speed overview. Not by colour but actually by strech in numbers

The track speed depended on multiple things, gradient, corner, this help it maintain some realism, otherwise players would just make 300 kph corners all the time (which with mods is fine).

The gradient does not affect the speed limit. It only affects a trains ability to reach the speed limit.
I think though that the OP might want to impose further restrictions on the speed limits, as oppose to removing the speed limits or increasing the limits. I know some players do intentionally put slower rails (using mods) in places to force their trains to go slower.

I think it may effect it on the way down the hill!.

You mean up the hill? The speed limit is still the same on the track. But the weight definitely affects.

Frankly, I wish it was possible to control the speed limit more. Plus some nice signs along the railway tracks would be neat too. Of course, you should not be able to extend the limit beyond what is possible (both track type and curvature wise), only lower it from that.

But speaking of speed limits, I find it a bit unrealistic that trains cannot go faster than their top speed. When a train is going downhill, it should be able to extend beyond its top speed, with braking required when it becomes unsafe (perhaps trains/cars should have a top speed and a safe top speed). While I don't want accidents and derailment in TF2, it could make some sense now to put carriages on a locomotive with a higher top speed, if the line goes downhill a lot.

because being able to set a speed limit == fantasy

If TF2 is going to have fantasy gameplay, i want a dragon train.

No I mean on the real railway there would be a restriction on the way down (particularly if there was a curve at the bottom of the hill), of course I'm forgetting that trains can't actually derail in this game!. Vimpster is correct when he says 'it only affects the trains ability to reach the speed limit'!.

I'd really like to see the system mentioned by the original poster implemented. But I'm not sure if they meant it should be implemented the way I'd like to see it done.

I like to develop realistic maps rather than economic based transport systems. I think there should be a easy to implement system that is used only for slowing trains down. In other words a real life "speed limit". For example real trains don't come charging into a station at a high rate of speed then slam on the brakes at the last second. Nor do they go flying through freight yards at a high rate of speed. I'd like to be able to easily reduce the train's speed wherever I want to with out otherwise affecting the train. For example if I set the speed limit to high for conditions. The train will still only go as fast as it could normally go. My speed limit can't make it go faster.

I can reduce train speed in the current game. But I had to make my own mod. Then tediously replace sections of track in highly developed areas. Then repair any graphics that where screwed up while replacing the track. The original poster's suggestion would make this a lot easier.

Yes, unfortunately the tracks in TpF1 are only two files without mods while representing only two speed limits, and the station track files are what is needed for the parameters of station track speed limits across-the-board.
