It is unfortunate to be caught in a death loop (if you don't have enough money/health to pay/survive Darktooth's cure), but there are a lot of clues that you're infected. Creepy blue fungus and glowing blue baretails are probably best handled with caution in the first place. Being infected also causes a message to appear in your status, and increasing number of blue motes to dance across your screen at all times.
I admit it's all still probably easier than it should be to miss the clues. When I saw all the dancing blue motes, I just thought the humidity was a little high that day. Also I think the warning message should appear during the new day feed, and not just in your status.
My problem was that the only place I knew could offer deathbite tailbeasts, weren't having them trigger so I became a real... fun guy... get it? Eeeeh?
I'll see myself out...
And yeah, metagame knowledge helps as well if you had it beforehand.
Saaaame, i knew the solution but the game wasnt having it and i failed terrible at catching anything else due to the affliction & the fact that i was in utterly pain fighting the salamanders. (and having no shinies because it was early in that life and i didnt bother yet)
