Medieval Torture Devices or Humor?

Hi all & Devs!

What a great game! I've been waiting for something like this ever since I played Dungeon Master 1&2.

With regards to torture, understandable that's a very hot topic (pun intended). Are the devs looking at historically accurate torture devices from history or is there more of a humor design going on?

If humour then one could presumably use large feathers and all sorts and perhaps border on the kinky side.

If historical then there's a plethora of all sorts of horrible things to draw from the pages of History.

I vote for the "Throne of Enlightenment". It's an Inquisitorial device. It consists mainly of a restraint system and a chair, made of wood and metal... With an upward facing, pyramid-shaped seat. You can see where this is going... (pun definitely intended)

I guess this is why this style of game has never been created before and because snuff/torture is a very dodgy topic. It certainly appeals to the darker side of humanity, and there may be a way around that with dark and gallows humour, but at the end of the day it's a very controversial place to be - people actually did this stuff. There's also the problem of attracting people who get a little too much enjoyment from it.

With regards to historical torture there's loads of stuff which could be of use to the Devs:

Breaking wheel
Hung, drawn & quartered
Iron maiden
Stretching rack
Brazen bull
Chappy choppy/willy pliers
Brest ripper
Flaying
Sawing
Crucifiction
Electric chair
Impalement
Gibbeting
Guillotine
Crushing
Pulled apart by horses


There's probably loads more but that's just off the top of my head.

As for humorous inventions I suppose you could have the following:

Cleaning hell's toilet
Being fired by a catapult into a fire or onto something sharp
Squashed by large rocks or a monster
Eaten by monsters
Eaten by insects
Having something hot shoved into certain orifices
Hung by nostrils
Hung by other parts
Bed of nails
Tied down and tickled with a feather


As for other ideas perhaps there should be demons with whips to keep people moving? A fancy desk for the concierge of Hell would be a nice touch too. Other creatures such as goblins, large spiders and other mythical monsters associated with hell/hades would be cool. Perhaps a large 3 headed guard dog like Cerberus? You could also have succubus, witches, death knights and other minions doing their own thing.

I see from the GIF pics that the game looks quite similar to Dungeon Keeper. I loved DK 1&2 and the interaction between the cursor/hand and the game is what gave it the deeper immersion. It would be cool if you could do other things, like hold a flaming torch to burn the workers and make them work harder. It would also be fun to slap them around a bit or hit them with a whip. As aforementioned, a wider range of demons and minions would also be fun, such as succubus, devils, demons, death knights, goblins and mythological monsters each with their own interests, skills and tortures. You could also have charon/sharon as the boatman who guides the dead to hell/the underworld. I guess you could also have Satan/Lucifer as the main man coming by to check out how well you're running his domain and you suffer his wrath if things go wrong. He could also send one of his lesser demon lords on a visit, a bit like the VIP in Theme Hospital.

Hi Devs, me again. I checked out the dev log and it said to comment on ideas. I've been quite bored at work lately but it's given me something to think about so I thought I'd ass this list for inspiration.



Sinner put in a pressure tube/atmospheric diving chamber and crushed/explodes/eyes and brains pop out comically with high pressure changes

Sinner fed into a wood chipper

Sinner tied to a long pole and slowly turned and cooked over a fire like a spit roasted hog

Sinner squashed through a large kitchen dicer so they're carved into little squares

Sinner has their head ripped off (or other body parts) by a demon and then it's kicked around and played catch with

Demons to have tridents that they can prod the sinners in the bottom with

Sinner slowly lowered into a pool of molten lava like in Indiana Jones

Sinner eaten by hellhounds/cerberus

Sinner licked and slobbered to death by cute and fluffy little hell hounds/cerberus

Sinner to be tied down and have molten lava slowly poured onto their sensitive parts until they're burnt away

Sinner eaten by a giant spider/monster/scary thing

Guillotine used to chop off head and different body parts

Sinner thrown into a giant tumble dryer and spun around and heated until they're reduced to a burnt blob

Sinner fed into a giant mangling machine, the type used to dry clothes in the Victorian period, and then comes out paper thin.

Sinner has parts of their body hammered flat by a giant steam hammer

Sinner fet water/air through a giant hose until they explode from high pressure

Sinner kept in a tiny cage for long periods of time and poked with hot sticks

Sinner has red hot poker shoved up certain orifices

Sinner fried like an egg on a giant saucepan and flipped over to fry the other side, they can then have seasoning/salt added and be eaten by a giant monster

Sinners beaten casually by other sinners/demons kicked in nuts/smacked in boobs/bashed on head etc

Sinners tied to stakes and used as an archery range by other sinners or demons



I studied History so a few of these are genuine and a few I've made up for humour.

I would love to see a section where you kick someone in the nut sack but when you cant kick any longer due to tiredness then you become the one who gets kicked in the nuts...

Hi Devs,

I played the demo last night and watched your video (great work). I may make a dedicated feedback thread. I really liked the biblical names like Adam and Eve, that was a nice unexpected touch and I look forward to seeing more people from history. Perhaps we can make a list of people who should be in hell?

It will be interesting to see the final game, I can't wait :)

I liked the idea of the food stuff consisting of recycled waste, you could have sinners being chopped up too, tho that's straying into edgy cannibalism territory. I think as long as it's done as humour it should be ok though.

In line with humour, I think having the dominatrix style demon with a black leather outfit like the original dungeon keeper would be funny too. It would also be great to see stuff like goblins, orcs and bizarre monsters. Perhaps you can add stuff from mythology too like Cerberus the three headed dog or Cyclops? Cerberus used to guard the gate to the ancient Greek underworld so it's somewhat related.

I've thought of a few other things which might be of interest:

Throwing sinners into a giant propeller so they're chopped up into a blood spray.

Stuck in a web and eaten by a giant spider.

Run over by a steam roller driven by a demon.

Put in a giant tumble dryer and spun round at high speed.

Pulled apart by demon horses or monsters.

Sawed in half with a wood mill saw.

Impaled on a spike.

Eaten by a piranhas, crocodile or shark pool.

You could also have sinners forced to fight each other in a gladiator combat for the amusement of demons.

Guillotine to chop off body parts - arms/head/legs/willy.

Put in a cage and eaten by birds/bats.

Put on a large target and shot at with arrows/throwing knives.


I'll try and think of some more, I have a lot of spare time lately :)
