I would recommend playing 2 mages max if you are feeling overwhelmed. If you are trying to manage 4 players there can be a lot going on.
Generally speaking, it is often a good idea to discard your most powerful gems/relics first from play and cast your most powerful spells first, so that you can use them sooner.
A common beginner mistake is to not buy enough spells/damage sources early on to deal with threats. Many minions will make the nemesis unmanageable if left alive for too long, such as bane sire. As decks are not reshuffled outside of a few nemesis mechanics, it is possible to see future hands, and buy spells to round out your damage in the future. Sorry if my explanation is a bit lacking, I can explain it better in voice chat.
People love to talk about picking sets of things. If you can only win with one specific set of things together, you're not playing a game, you're just painting by numbers.
