My solo class is almost a 50/50 mix Pilot / Scav, slightly more into pilot than Scav though. I only put in two points into Engi for the repair plate and charging batteries.

The special ability for gunner is not required. Energy overload + vent the ship to -90 and there's no need for it. This also gives access to the Flux Harmonizer which is very good to have early on. I can stand up and recharge my beamcaster batteries and leave the ship to help scavenge with the ability to grapple.
Hope this helps.
