difference between shield and shielding

is there a difference between shield and shielding? sometimes when I have shielding, it doesn't block damage, but when I have shield it does?

so whats the difference?

Shielding indicates the amount of shield you start your turns with, so for example if you have the shielding threads augment on weaver and you have 2 enemies threaded at the end of the turn, the augment will grant you two shield at the start of your next turn.
A skill like ironclap on the other hand will instantly grant you 1 shield upon using it.
