Outside of that I like to go with one strong AOE skill and anything that will reduce cooldowns.
Eye of the storm mixed with Grim Vortex from Jinx is totally busted.
Eye of the storm is wiiiild
What is Omni damage? Does it do anything special?
Omni damage is just what it sounds like, a stat that boosts both phys and mag simultaneously.
Building pure drone is pretty awkward since getting physical damage boosts early affects ONLY drone damage, as all the damage skills of the star captain are magic. pivoting into drone damage if you get some early good vestiges/augments for it can be successful though.
- while the Cryoclasm binding of star captain is decent, it doesn't EXCEL at anything on it's own. it's damage is a bit higher than just zapping something with 2 chillazer hits. It's benefit comes in with:
1) being able to simultaneously use drone damage on many enemies at once....any AoE skill can do this though
2) stacking frostbite on the main target (only useful if you have a drafted skill that is fairly spammable and doesn't already add frostbite, otherwise your chillazer will ALSO apply frostbite just fine)
3) using some of the ascensions for silliness, like with eye of the storm
you certainly can use cryoclasm as your main nuke, but it generally takes some serious investment, to the point that other drafted nuke bindings like Jinx will easily serve you just as well. Cryoclasm does give multiple avenues to enhance it though....you can boost magic/omni damage for pure damage, or frostbite/magic/omni damage to enhance the followup hits.
- Frostbite is a "meh" damage source. With many other aspects being able to either build up power and 1-shot nuke most of the board, or apply DoT damage and them "forget" about the enemy, frostbite is an awkward mechanic that requires you to build it up like a DoT, but then also continue expending hits on the target to actually trigger it.
Luckily it synergizes well with the fact that star captain already wants magic damage, so you can build up it's power without needing to prioritize it.
- Mission leader can give some hefty benefits. It is USUALLY worth it to use mission leader before a big hit to do drone damage to everything, but if your damage is very lopsided (much more magic damage than physical), it may NOT be worth doing drone damage if it would take you out of offensive mode
Star captain is a rounded aspect that really doesn't excel at any one role, but can kinda do some of all of it. It CAN nuke, but isn't great at it. It CAN defend with mission leader and dazing augments, but isn't great at it. It CAN be fairly mobile, since it doesn't usually require repositioning yourself to do damage, but it doesn't have any movement bindings. It best excels in doing consistent, moderate damage with lots of triggers to increase that damage. MOST damage-enhancing effects will boost Star Captain's overall damage, and it can easily dabble into burn or smite as well with the aid of the several vestiges that make frost and burn damage synergize.
Any direction you choose to take Star Captain is likely to benefit it, BUT at the same time, it can be tempting to try and get ALL THE BONUSES, and fall short, leaving you with lots of tiny bonuses that don't stack up as well as if you'd prioritized a few sets more strongly.
