You don't even own the game. What are you talking about?
You're correct. It's been a relatively bug free and smooth experience always leaving me wanting to do another run. The game is run and had game play other rougelites don't helmed by devs with experience.
It's a part of the game, people like to customise how they look. When you're asking for 20 dollars for an EARLY ACCESS TITLE and you ALREADY HAVE A PREDATORY MONETISATION SYSTEM IN PLACE it's a pretty HUGE red flag.
Which is sad because Monster Train was such an incredible game and massively successful. Guess you can't expect even indie studios these days from selling their soul to farm psychological exploitation for monetary gain. It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gross.
Gaming used to be about making a finished product that's FUN for the player and to include stuff like customisation because it makes the experience better.
Now it's all detached from the customer and devs treat gamers as ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cash cows to milk for as much money as they can when they could do just fine without exploiting psychological weaknesses of the human psyche.
Was interested in this game but honestly, this dev studio is now dead to me, selling out for more capital when they could have succeeded purely on the merit of their previous game is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ grotesque.
The developers could have very well just chosen to make a cash shop, with direct purchases (not unlike FF14 or even WoW) i.e, a hat for 2.99 or a mix of both, etc, but they made the decision to not do that, they decided to make a play money currency conversion with uneven rates. They also chose to include a battle-pass and chose to include a rotational cash shop.
They didn't need to , but they sat down at a discussion table and made the decision to employ predatory monetary tactics that nickle and dime the playerbase at some point in the development cycle. Whether it was pure coincidence from borrowing other MTX models or a well-aware decision no one knows, but it understandably looks bad for a weary buyer from the outside looking in. Are we going to pretend there aren't a plethora of shovelware EA titles with sketchy and dodgy devs? Are we going to pretend that there aren't triple A titles right now on the market that put in the literal bare minimum into their "live service" game from a technical and content standpoint, with a heavy focus on monetization sales with some hollow promise of "always listening to feedback"? Like come on lmfao
With that said, they have since taken away the rotational shop, and have made plans to nip away what actually makes battle passes predatory, that being FOMO factor. My only personal gripes in relation is the shinies, specifically the fact that 7(?)$ buys you 1200, but then the items cost 1250. They added a 50 shinies option but, why not just lower the price of the items to 1200 instead? Idk it just seems very odd and overall unnecessary to me. Like some mobile game shop payment model from some previous scrapped version of the dev cycle.
The only other thing i mildly have a issue with is that theres no way to earn shinies beyond dev streams and premimum BP. If they keep it in the BP then idrc, but for someone that may want/like to collect the only option would be to drop $$$. So they just sit in the game files unusable for someone staying f2p.
